Question:

Why is it so difficult to communicate with elected gov't officials?

I try to write and call my senators and representatives. They keep passing crazy laws that violate our freedoms and it bothers me that the gov't is getting too involved in our personal lives. Maryland raised taxes on cigarettes and now they are saying it is illegal to buy cigarettes in DE or VA and bring them back to MD. It will be a felony! We can't spend our money where we want? We already paid taxes on our income! How do we protest? Not just this law, but there seems to be a trend of invasion and force. Comments?

  1. well, they are very busy people even if they don't appear so.

  2. Because they don't give a c**p about you.

  3. You could never legally bring cigs across state lines. That is call contraband because the state taxes were never paid on them in the state where you brought the cigs. I agree with you. Next time you bring in contraband cigs, make sure you don't brag to friends or tell anyone. Pay for them with cash in the other state and not a credit card either.

  4. Someone has to take a stand, go against the grain and just do it. A ll awareness knowledge and understanding are keys that produce wisdom. They make laws to bind and hinder the flourishing, so they won't show them up as being the fools that they really are.

  5. Because they don't want to hear from you.

  6. Depends on how many people they represent, I guess.  I assume that, since you're mentioning a state tax, that you're contacting your state legislators and not the folks in Washington?

I have, on occasion, contacted my U.S. Senators through their websites.  Sometimes I hear back... when I do, about two-thirds of the time it looks like someone actually read my message.

I've heard other people say that calling their offices in Washington is more effective... odds are next to zero of actuially speaking to the Congressperson, but at least you're talking to someone in their office in close proximity, raising the odds of the message being heard.

For your issue, I guess it would be the offices in Annapolis.

  7. Vote for Ron Paul he seems to be the only candidate that acknowledges these things and we all know whats happening we are just helpless to do anything.. just short of picking up guns and rushing the white house.. we americans want peaceful discourse, but now they're tamapering with the second amendment......wtf happened to the America i used to read about.

  8. That's the problem with the power packed into the heads (and pockets) at a federal level. They are untouchable.

Locally, you can make contact with your leaders (after a little work). Federally, you must be a billionaire, or head of a top corporation to make contact.

That is exactly why the federal governments power should be strictly limited by the people using the Constitution.
