Generally I'd say I'm a pretty deep person, while I do enjoy material objects just like everyone else, my friendships and relationships are based 100% on personality. HOWEVER, sometimes (usually at the office, or when I'm out) I find it REALLY easy to judge people based on looks before giving them the opportunity to get to know them. Why is it so d**n easy?? It's terribly embarrassing to admit, but when I look at high schools these days I can't help but feel like it was something we were all taught in school, it's a pattern that I haven't let go of! It's so much easier to say that I'm not judgmental at all. But the truth is...that's a lie.

Furthermore I just want to state that it usually only happens in public places, in the stage before I have the opportunity to learn about peoples lives. I think I need to start forming some better habits.

  1. because being shallow requires no effort of thought and no investment of self

  2. I know this is restating the "obvious" and what you've already said, but it's easy because it's easy. It doesn't take any thought or effort to be shallow. However, judging people simply by the way they look is not new nor will it be old anytime soon. Everyone does it, you're not alone...it's just what you do with it. Did you invite the fat girl to ladies night out? Did you smile at the weird IT guy? Those are first, but important steps...you're fine...

  3. I think we all do it just because we all want to belong to a group of some sort.  over the years including high school we see groups forming because human beings crave companionship.  that's why we get pets have kids get married etc...  socializing is an instinct that's why it seems easy.  i think we all do it, it's kinda natural to an extent.  The only people who seem to do it less are old people so maybe it's something we have to learn to overcome once we aren't so attractive or youthful. also, the higher pedestal you put yourself up on the easier it is to look down on everyone else.

  4. Wish I knew.  Just about nobody ever gives me a chance, despite the fact the small handful of people who have over the years say I'm a great guy who can be really funny, smart, sweet, and all that good stuff.

Doesn't matter how pleasant a conversation may be, once someone sees my pic, that's the end of that. :/
