  1. Rent is high for sure....but you save money in a lot of other ways.

I don't drink at the resorts.  I drink at the local bars, and when I go to a beach bar I know all the bartenders, so no I don't pay $8 for a drink.

Also, I barely use any gas at all.  I don't pay any taxes.  And most of the things I do for recreation are free.  Like the beach, riding bikes, snorkeling.

I'm not a lawyer or a banker, and I do pretty well here in Grand Cayman.

  2. It's a friggin' ISLAND and islands are ALWAYS expensive to live on because space and resources are limited and anything that smacks of 21st Century is grossly overpriced.

You ARE right the locals live cheaper, though.  I remember when I first moved to Haiti,  a 5th of Barbencort Rum cost me $5, but after a couple of years, when I could speak Creole as well as the locals.. .I was buying it for a buck a bottle.

  3. Almost everything needs to be imported which means transportation costs.  Natives aren't staying in 5 star hotels, buying expensive meals and not worrying where their next Cayman dollar comes from.  When you go on vacation, do you spend more then when you stay home?  Of course you do because you splurge while on vacation.
