Question:

Why is it so hard for people to at LEAST tip 15%? Didn't anyone see Waiting because it does happen...a lot?

A server never forgets a bad tipper or people that stiff them. 99% of the time we can tell what kind of tip you are going to leave so you can believe I've seen some really nasty things. So the question is do people realize this?

  1. I used to deliver pizzas in college, so I always tip well.  We did do some pretty messed up things to people who didn't tip though.  One clean story is about a woman who technically lived inside our delivery area (she was within five miles as the crow flies).  However, she lived on top of a hill.  We had to drive round and round it to get to the top.  She actually lived like 10 miles from the store.  So, we'd spend half an hour getting her pizza to her and she'd never tip.  After she did it to me twice, I started "losing" her ticket.  Everytime I would see her order on the screen, I would go over to the kitchen and throw her ticket away.  After never getting her pizza about three times in a row, she stopped calling.  Victory is mine!!

  2. there are always people who doesn't tip, but most of the times it is because of the service.

i've been to several places which i didn't tip any because i was so pissed by the services, you sat there and no body came over and ask if you need anything (hello! i am thirsty here).

if you did communicate with your customers all the time and helped them often, and they still leave next to nothing on the table, then i suggest you switch to a different place to work.  people won't tip if the food is bad.

  3. I'm a server and I belive the movie "Waiting" is the worst way to portray servers. They were just a bunch of losers who partied at night with no direction in life. I and the people I know who work in restaurants have something better in mind for ourselves. We're all working to support a family or going to school. Sure we get upset when someone leaves a crappy tip, but we would never show our junk to each other or put pubes in someone's food. Please don't compare other servers in the industry to that c**p movie.

It's one thing if you get a c**p tip once and a while. There are truly people out there who don't know to tip. But if it's happening all the time to you, maybe you should re-evaluate your serving technique. I would also recommend not serving in casual dining. Show a little initiative, learn wines and more upscale foods & cooking techniques and get into fine dining. The tips are much better there.

It does suck knowing that people go out with the intention of spending money on food but no intention of tipping their server. Those folks really should get take out or stay home & cook.

  4. no and i don't really care.

  5. Well I have been a server for about 5 yrs. I would never do anything like they did in Waiting. Yes some people don't know how to tip, but then you always get the generous ones who make up for the other ones that didn't tip as well.

If  you are always getting less than 15% maybe you aren't doing the things you are supposed to. Maybe you need to greet tables earlier, maybe you need to check back more, etc.

As a former server, I can understand if you are busy but if it is slow and I have to wait forever for something I get very impatient. (especially drink refills!)  I will hardly ever tip less than 15%, but you would get 15% instead of 25%

  6. as a customer all i can say is sometimes, i really don't have much money. we's in some broke times and ten percent is just gonna have to be good enough.

  7. I think people really don't realize you have the power to make them sick.  I have served for a number of years and yes it may be service but the reality is it is the sign of the times.  People barely have the money to eat out let alone tip.  Personally I would not eat out if I didn't have enough to tip accordingly.  And even if the server was really crappy I would have said a comment nicely like "I see you're having a bad day" and that would maybe make someone realize they aren't doing a good job and change. The only real good tippers are the people that work or have worked in the industry or have had family that has.  You just have to take the good with the bad and hope the bad tippers get a flat tire. ;)

  8. Maybe the customer was "stiffed" on service.
