Why is it so hazy in britain when there is an easterly wind?

  1. There is no reason an easterly wind would bring hazy weather over the British islands. I would rather say that it is most likely the opposite. Of course, since I live in Norway and not Britain, I can't be certain of your weather but an easterly wind would come if there is e.g. a low pressure center over north Germany. In which case, the air coming from Scandinavia is already dried out for maritime temperate moisture. Haze would most probably come with a south-westerly that brings air masses from the Atlantic.

    Now, you can also have haze in an inversion; when a high pressure sinks the air and warms it up above. But then, it happens together with fog, early in the morning. There is no special wind direction in a high pressure, so to speak.

    Another solution is that you live on the east coast and then you witness, early spring, haze from the sea moving inland as a sea breeze starts developing.

    But all that affects only the coastal area.
