Why is it so hot in my garage?!?!?

I have insulated my 2-car garage, because I want to rent it out to my brother....so why is it still getting hot in there in the afternoon? The room has two air vents and I never turn my air off...it's always on auto..

Shouldn't it stay fairly cold in there since it's insulated? What does insulation mean, if not that? How can I get it cold in there, without ripping a hole in my wall and plugging in an AC Unit??? HELP!!!

  1. How far is the garage from the AC unit?  I’ve noticed that in my house, the closer the vents are to the unit the colder the room. I assume it’s because the air doesn’t travel through as much duct work.

Have you also checked that the duct work is completely hooked up? If there’s a break in the chain, that could be your issue.

  2. maybe because you didn't put insulation on the ceiling? my garage gets really hot and we have insulation but not on the ceiling so maybe that is it

  3. Not sure what the problem is, but you could try a ceiling fan and/or an attic fan.  If you don't already have an attic fan...it's well worth the money.  I bought one approx. 4 years ago for $125.00 and it was pretty easy to install.  HELPS soooo much!  My bill is much less now too.  Good Luck.

  4. Have you insulated to roof part? if not do that,

  5. try and get a ceiling fan to help the air circulate

  6. omg it is supposed to be hott duhhhhhhhh

  7. well the sun comes out in the afternoon the garage never gets air conditioning I'm not sure what to tell you. get a professional to tell you in a proper way.

  8. check the mammoth door for proper seal and roof  put ceiling up if not already, check exterior for cracks and caulk them one little crack can lose alot of air so make sure its air tight.

  9. You probably don't have insulation in the outside walls , some builders don't put it in to save money.

  10. Does the garage still have a garage door?Heat travels hot to cold. The colder you try to make the garage the faster the heat will come in through the door. The thermostat will never satisfy when it's inside the garage and when it's satisfys inside the house the garage will still be very uncomfortable.

I installed a 2 ton split a/c in my garage and I only turn it on when I am in my garage, which still has a door, and I can really feel the heat coming through the door in the heat of the day.

    Good luck.

  11. Heat rises.........so you need a hole at the highest point to vent the room and roof...........cut a few more vents in the back side of your roof up as high as you can get........need air movement...........good luck

  12. Without knowing how the garage was built, wall thickness and type, insulation in the ceiling and on the outside walls, this is hard to answer.  Is the attic atop the isulation well vented? Heat can really build up there and pour down into your space even with insulation in between.  You may need to add a roof vent.

What are these air vents?  Where it pulling or pushing air?

Insulation is critcal, but it is not all ecompassing.  What you have has to be the right amount, well installed and other air leak areas closed up such as with chaulk.  What about the garage door(s)?  Are they possible air leaks.

Realize your home heating and cooling will not work for the garage.  It is sized for your home.  You'll have to find another source for the garage addition.  Yeah, maybe you'll need to run an AC unit thru the wall.  What about heating later on?

  13. Have you insulated walls & ceiling?

Is there a large window area facing south?

What about the garage door, is it insulated?

Is there a return duct/vent for the A/C?
