They were one of the innovators of fast food.  What made them popular was their consistency (being consistent) of their product.  Which means, as a consumer, you can expect that the food will taste the same wherever you go.

After it becoming pioneers for fast food, it eventually became a brand name.  Consumers will always find comfort with brands they already know.  Once again .. no surprises (consistency).

These are both popular because they are both quick and easy. It desires no washing up and its a simple and easy meal to eat. Also it does taste good.

I'm not sure about KFC kentucky but yes I do know that Mcdonalds is very popular.

For starters Macca's is all around the world. From australia to japan. The meals themselves are very cheap [example: in Australia a cheeseburger is just $2.00] and most places I've been to are quick and efficient. The place is also very old and theres lots to choose from the menu [from triple cheeseburgers to multigrain turkey with cranberry sauce]

Mcdonalds is also a great sponsor for many organisations and supports young kids [here in australia] to keep fit and active through fun runs, and it even sponsored Australian idol [a reality show on television]

It's fast...

It can be eaten while you drive your car, and...

We know it's not nutritious...

(And us Americans "hate" anything that's good for us nutritionally...we're a very tough people...we can eat cardboard and shoe leather, and smile as long as it has enough barbeque sauce on it...hee hee)
