I'm not a big fan of tennis, but I have been getting into it during Wimbeldon, but one thing I don't understand is why are the fans so quiet when the two guys/girls are playing.

and by the way

GO NADAL.

  1. tennis is a "silent game" like gold, polo, and duct tennis. it is considered rude to talk while playing tennis

  2. Because when you are playing tennis the most annoying thing in the world is a loud audience. I can't stand it when they get rowdy lol...

Tennis is one of the few sports that requires an extremely strong mental game and complete concentration.

  3. they listening for flatulence.

seriously, it's more tradition and for the enjoyment of the audiance than anything. the crowd want's to hear the grunts and ball coming off the racket.

these clowns telling you it requires more concentration than other sports are totally off-base.

i can assure you that if crowds started making constant noise the players would adapt and play just the same.

  4. It's because the players have to keep concentrated and study where the ball is coming from and when, they are both playing on large sized courts so they have to study where the ball will land and if they will make it in time there.

  5. because tennis is the gayest sport ever made pretty much

  6. so they can concentrate lol

  7. Because it can be distracting to the players since they don't make any noise.

  8. Same reason why it is quiet during golf and bowling. So that the noise of the audience doesn't distract the players.

  9. Everyone is quiet so that they will not distract the players. That is why they applause after someone gets the point.

  10. This is only one of the etiquette rules still in play at Wimbledon.

For more info see the following website.

  11. This is because the people are trying to be respectful and let the players concentrate. If the peole get too loud, the umpire tells them to quiet down.

Also, if you've ever been to a tennis match, every single sound you make can be heard, and all the people look at you and shush you, so basically its out of respect for the players.
