Why is it so that low budget airlines do not provide substantial meals during the flight?

  1. They say they cut the meals and so cut the airfares.

    It is not only meals. even other facilities are also cut.

Budget carriers are those airlines selling their tickets at the lowest prices.  Thet can offer such ticketing only when they cut short their expenses.  Since the cost of buying or leasing an aircraft is the same for budget and legacy carriers, they can only reduce other expenses such as salaries of cabin crew and ground staff.  Since pilots and engineers have to be paid their due, it is always a cut on the facilites offered to passengers.  Hence there is no free meal or reading materials provided to the passengers.  They also accept if there any non-peak time operational offers offered by airports.
