Why is it so wrong to be racist?

EVERYBODY in the U.S has the right to think, feel, and say (most of the time) whatever they want. People are always saying you shouldn't care what other people think, and if someone wants to dislike person of another race why can't they? As long as they aren't out there and committing hate crimes or confronting someone face to face they should just be left alone.

I'm already expecting to be called ignorant even though I never said I was racist, and all that comes along with this question, but we have the right to dislike who and think what we want no matter if its wrong or not. Everybody has their own opinions, and no matter what people say or do nothing will ever change racism.

  1. Yes. You have the right to "think" whatever you want, but as I have come to find out, freedom is limited by power. You have the right to "say" what you feel, as long as it doesn't infringe upon another person's freedom or beliefs, thus freedom becomes hindered. So yes, you're right, but also wrong. =^-^=

  2. Any form of bigotry is an expression of anger, anger is unhealthy and unhelpful. Anger comes from fear, and fear has it's roots in ignorance. Expressing bigoted views generates fear, and anger. If a fearful, angry world is where you want to be.

continue with your divisive, fearful, ignorant views.

  3. well all I'm say in  is get to know before not liken them you never know who might like

  4. everybody in America has the freedom of speech. I am free to tell everybody i hate Mexicans(which i don't), HOWEVER i am not free to act upon my beliefs and take away their rights. If i wanted to create a hate Mexican group where all we would do is hate Mexicans that would be perfectly legit but if we were to harm them in any way that would be against the law

  5. yes i agree with you,if you dont like some one then so be it.

  6. You're right. You're free to be racist, or biased, or bigoted, or what have you. As long as your beliefs don't turn into actions that infringe on another's rights, as outlined in the US Constitution and the constitution of whichever state you live. You can't regulate people's emotions, only -- to limited extents -- their actions. So if someone skips through town telling everyone he meets, "I hate homos," he can't be imprisoned for it. But the guy shouldn't be surprised if, say, the owner of the town's local diner (who supports g*y rights) refuses to serve him in his restaurant, or if the the guy who owns the gas station (who has a L*****n daughter) refuses to fill up his tank.

I guess what I'm saying is that just because there is freedom of speech and thought, it doesn't mean that there is freedom from consequences, too.

  7. I have to agree. No matter what the government continues to do, you simply can't regulate empathy or compassion. If the person has it, they have it. As long as a crime isn't being committed, or civil rights being violated--someone else's opinion is their right. I am not racist either, but you have to also understand most Americans do not even know what racist means. It has been twisted to include any time you don't agree with someone of another race, if you ask something (in an attempt to learn) about the other race, the list never ends.

  8.     I think it's more of a moral thing than a legal thing.  Of course, hate crimes are bad, but I understand that breaking the law is not what you're talking about.  What it really comes down to is this: WHY do you dislike this group of people?  What makes them inferior to you?  On a really basic level, it's just not nice.  Plus, if everyone was a racist, sooner or later there WOULD be crimes.

I'm not calling you ignorant, but I doubt that you've fully thought about this question.  Perhaps you have no feelings for others and don't really care that the fact that you don't like them just because of where they're from really hurts them.  Racism leads to inequality among the American people, and most people do not like inequality.  Whether you want to believe it or not, ALL people are equal, regardless of where they're from.

  9. Whatis wrong about being a racist is that by definition a person concludes that a whole race should be discriminated against. All black people are bad, so to speak.

Liking someone or not liking someone on an individual basis based on that person integrity, character and other non-color traits is fine.

And yes I believe that racism will be around for a while, but with the prominence of Bi-racial children, there could come a time when we are all brown and then we would be racist twoard darker brown people than us.

I am not kidding. Racism exsists in the black culture , darke black people and lighter skinned black people are racist to each other.

And yes I said BLACK PEOPLE. There is no African American. My great grandfather came to America from Norway when he was sixteen, but I am not a Norwegian American. I am caucasion.

Get over it. People will have their differences, but whena person of power,i.e. T.V. star, or celebrity and makes a blanket statement then it is perceived as a hate thing.

  10. i agree. as long as no one is getting hurt, they have the right to think whatever they want.

  11. yeah i do agree . freedom of speech all the wayyy.

As long as they aren't out there and committing hate crimes or confronting someone face to face they should just be left alone.

    I'm from the UK

Immigrants are stealing are jobs and trying to take over our country grrrr

  12. You know, the most bonkers thing about "racism" is that there is ONE human race. Yes, ONE. We are different colours, but there is one race. Are you Italian? If you are, your attitudes might just explain the c**p time I have with insular people here in Italy!!

  13. It is fine to dislike whom ever you choose...that is your right.  But to decide to dislike someone before you have even gotten to know them is unkind.  Though there are black, white, and hispanic, or Jewish, and Muslim's for that matter-that I have met, and not hit it off with, I do not judge the rest of their cultural people based on the relationship I have had (or not) with these few people.  To do so would have prevented me from having very fulfilling relationships with other's in these cultures.

  14. You're right. You have the right to dislike or hate whomever you choose to. However, I would love it if people would judge me by my character and not my race. I have met people of all kinds of races and have been hurt by people of different races. I still cannot be racist against anyone because of this.

Racism will be around for a very long time. I choose not to participate.

  15. the idea of hating an entire race purely based on apperance shows the shallowness and superficiality of the person.

to answer your question: as long as the person doesnt show out the hatred in public everything, being racist is fine.

but it is wrong to be racist same way as it is wrong to think that men are superior to women.

if you dislike a person of another race because of the way he behaved it is fine...but to hate the entire race is like going a bit over the board.

  16. Why do people hate someone simply because of race? It's something they can't control. Why would the US allow that?

It's people like THAT that started the Holocaust! Have you ever thought about that? It could escalate to that if it's allowed!

**It's OKAY to dislike someone, but not an entire group of people JUST because of their skin color/culture/religion/s*x/whatever.

  17. Of course you have the right to believe what you want. But being racist requires you to generalize about a whole group(s) of people. Who really looses out? You do (by that I mean the person who is racist).  Not accepting diversity diminishes your capacity to be a loving human being.

And here's a big question - are you planning to have children? What will you teach them? Even teaching racism via subtle example is a disservice to them. (Again, I don't mean you - I mean the racist person).

Also - if you don't believe in equality for all, you could be an unknowing participant in creating more racism.

Bottom line is - you can't be a racist and believe it doesn't affect others. Whether subtly or otherwise, racism hurts all of us.
