I'm sure that young people in my area must die once in awhile. So why are there never any obituaries for them? Is there some rule against it?

  1. i see babies and up in our paper.  maybe their families aren't up to giving the information to the paper.

  2. maybe cause old people die a lot more than young people do, lol.

  3. When I started working for a newspaper in college, I was a clerk writing obituaries. I'm sad to say that I saw a lot of obits for very young people-- including one toddler. That one broke my heart.

There is no rule against it... I'll bet if you look more regularly or more closely you will see obits for young people every so often... but old people tend to die more often than young people, as I'm sure you know, so obits for young people are rare.

  4. idk. there was a 14 year old boy in the obituaries a couple months ago. he was sort of a friend of mine who was riding his bike on the sidewalk at 7 at night with a friend and a car (driven by a drunk) jumped the curb and hit him and his friend. he died, his friend survived.  they put an article about his death in the paper, but not in the obituaries part.

    in memory of J.R.

  5. It is mostly old people that die. If a youngster dies it is more likely to be in the news section.

  6. They are in there. But if it's someone under 18, the newspaper has to get parental consent to release the names or details. I don't make a habit of reading the obituaries-- that's pretty depressing-- but I've seen younger people mentioned several times.
