  1. ********************YES!****************...

A big part of the game is direct interface with a human across the board.  On line you don't know who or what you are playing. Every kid can download a free chess program and use it when you begin to pound on them.

  2. Common Tournament times are 15 and 20 minutes to each player on one of those special timers. Playing fast is good, but dont rush every move and always predict your opponent so you can steal his time to plot your next manuver.

Occasional random moves may open a door.

    Works for me

  3. Cuz you probably hang around with people that cant play.

And the internet is swarmed with all types of PC whizzes

  4. Chess over a board with a real person facing you is far better. You can see what the other player thinks of your moves, or his own, and the position.

Fast chess inevitably leads to mistakes, so is better suited for stronger players with long memories - players who have learned long opening repertoires, and the theory behind them.

I think a less experienced player (like myself) needs longer time controls to really think about the position. This way, if your move is a mistake, at least it is less likely to be as severe a blunder than in a fast game, and it is an honest one, not one forced purely by time constraints.

Maybe a local chess club can help you play games against real people in time controls suitable to you both.

  5. 60 minute and 45 minutes per game is best google the stc bunch.
