Question:

Why is it that MMA fans are so impressed by Wanderlei Silva's record?

31 wins, 8 loses is not even close to impressive, there's a lot of professional boxers who have a 35 + wins with 0 loses. I don't want to hear excuses " We'll MMA is harder because you have to be good in all disciplines (big lie)" I can just say " Boxing is harder because you are only allowed to use your hands, and nothing else." Randy Couture already said that boxing and mma are VERY alike. They are both fighting sports.

  1. They are both fighting sports. They are not the same though. Not even close. A boxer would get killed in the Octagon. Anderson Silva is way better than Wanderlei anyway.

  2. the problem is with boxing fans, they judge boxers too quickly if they lose.  The promoters don't want to take any hard fights for their fighters because the fans think a couple losses is the end of the world.  So you have top prospects coming up fighting 30 fights before they take a real challenging fight.

If the boxing fans would stop being so lame and demand perfect records then great fights would be made.  Boxing is plagued by poor match making something that has not infected MMA yet.

  3. Dude stfu. Quit whining. thats a big lie???LOL and using only hands is harder? LOL Ok just be quiet and stop whining its annoying now.

  4. MMA isnt harder...its different.

ok my MMA coach was a pro boxer...47 wins, 3 losses with like 45 knocks out or something like that (VAST majority of wins via knock out)...

In boxing, sure having the rediculous ability to knock out almost anyone put infront of you is pretty cool...but in MMA, you need to be able to do everything.  not only avoid punches, but kicks, elbows, knees, getting taken down...

especially in PRIDE where wanderlei is from...there is SO MUCh going on ....you get knocked out in pride for a sec, and your head is getting kicked....lots of times....hard....

not to mention think of boxing like this.

you get knocked out, you have 10 seconds to recover..."put your gloves up"...thats all you gotta do, and be able to stand well.. people could get knocked out 50 times in a fight if they wanted to and had the heart to get back up.  In mma you get knocked out ONCE. just one time, then buddy is ontop of you  raining punches...and trust me, those little mma gloves hurt..............a lot more than boxing gloves.

i hope this helps...especially the last paragraph!!

  5. Because even in those 8 lossses they were still exciting fights to watch.  You have athletes who fight and then you have fighters, Wand is a fighter.  You know Randy has a MUCH less impressive record at 16-8 and is considered one of the best of all time, why is that.  There are so many ways to win and so many ways to lose.  BTW wRandy has an 0-0 pro boxing record, where did he get this frame of reference that they are similar, he's never prepared for a pro boxing match.

  6. anyone with a brain knows a record doesn;t make a fighter but to humour you, Wanderlei's losses:

    Liddell

    Hendo

    Cro Cop

    Arona

    Hunt

    Ortiz

    Belfort

    Mariano

    And some notable wins:

    Van Arsdale

    Hendo

    Sakuraba (3)

    Rampage (2)

    Yoshida (2)

    Nakamura

    Arona

    Kondo

    What was your argument again?

  7. Because boxers generally have padded records. Meanwhile, in MMA, it's less common. Although, Wanderlei has fought his fair share of cans -- alongside good competition.

As for boxing being harder because you can only use your hands, that's not true at all. Both sports require equal amounts of hard work. But that's not the point. The point is that, in MMA, its harder to remain undefeated.

Why is that? Because there is greater variety. In both boxing and MMA, it's true that 'styles make fights.'  Its old news that in-fighters tend to beat out-fighters, that sluggers tend to beat in-fighters, etc. But in MMA, there's more than 3-4 "styles."

Even this is simplifying, but the 4 main disciplines of MMA are BJJ, Wrestling, Muay Thai, and Boxing. And, like boxing, these other disciplines have sub-styles within them. In BJJ, there's big difference between Big Nog and Paulo Filho. In Wrestling, there's a big difference between Josh Koscheck and Randy Couture.

And then, you have to consider the fact that all of these disciplines will be mixed together in some way or another. Then it gets really complicated.

My point is that, with SOO many facets of fighting to worry about, it's nearly impossible to keep all of your bases covered. And that's why a good MMA record is different from a good boxing record. Well, that and the issue about padded records.

  8. but in mma u have to use more than just hand u got wrestling strikes submissions. boxing maybe hard but its no where near as hard as mma ive done both so id know. and as for wanderlei he has beaten some of the best its not his record they are impressed by. its the people he has beaten, in the way he has beaten them. u can b 100-0 and not be even clse to a guy whose 10-11 its who you've beat

  9. listen im not gunna knock boxing its tough

i took it for about 2 months at a gym before transitioning over to MMA

but the very first MMA proved a wrestler couldn't stand toe to toe in a MMA fight

    infact as i recall

Royce Gracie took a boxer to the ground who tapped out instantly when he couldn't stand up

that being said Wandy Silva has a very impressive win streak in Pride for a number of years including destorying Rampage Jackson not once but twice

  10. He went almost 5 years without loosing.  His fights are always exciting, he never really fights any cans...And personally i think you are an idiot

  11. In boxing you win by number of landed blows, strength of the blow or knockout, technique, and activity.

In MMA you win by number of landed blows, strength of the blow, technique, activity, knockout, and TAPOUT.

They are very similer in how you would score the match. However they are not the same when it comes to weapons, and vulnerability. Boxing yes you only have punches, and the punches are all above the belt. In MMA you have punches, kicks, knees, elbows, chokes, and joint manipulations. You cannot kick in the crotch, manipulate small joints, eye gouge, face stomp, or headbutt, with another few additions that are similer to the ones listed.

That does in fact make it much more difficult to deal with aside from the fact that the gloves are only 4oz instead of 11oz. Making again for a harder and more focused impact. There is more, but I'll leave that to somebody else.
