Why is it that according to your mother-in-law your child looks like everyone in your husband's family and no one in yours not even you?

Thanks

  1. She's just excited; ignore her.  My mother in law thinks my kids

look like her side of the family, my mother thinks they look like her side. I see some resemblance to people on both sides.  Love that my oldest looks like my late brother, except with his dad's blonde hair.

  2. Maybe she needs new glasses...my grandson didn't look like my son until he got older, almost 8 at the earliest.  My daughter started out looking like me and my younger sister, but now is her dad and aunt through and through....

  3. pride !

  4. because mother in laws suck!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Apparently because she doesn't like you.

  6. No reason other than she's used to the physical features in her own family.  Like my side of the family tends to think my kids look more like me or them.  My husband's side sees more of my husband or their relatives in them.

  7. Probably because mine do!  Both my children were mini versions of my husband, my son still is, my daughter is starting to look more like my side of the family.  And since my mother-in-law ignores my kids, I don't have this issue.

  8. LOL! My mother in law is like this... I think its not a personal attack on us. You tend to look for association in things you know. I see my 5 week old looking more like my side of the family... but I've seen/known them for 21 years, his side I've only known for 4 years... I think its kinda normal.

  9. They aren't all that way. My grandsons look exactly like their father and their mom is my child. LOL

I think we see the features and characteristics that are most familiar to us.  For example, people who know my daughter's father see her and know exactly who she is even though they don't know her. They say my daughter looks exactly like her father's mother. People who know me and see her on the street know who she is because she looks exactly like me, yet her grandmother and I don't look anything alike.

People always knew who I was as a kid because I looked exactly like whichever parent they knew even though they didn't know me.

As my grandson likes to say, "Its a mystery".

  10. she wants your family to feel like s**+* and she is trying to make her family feel good. At least she didn't say the baby looks nothing like your husband.

  11. here's another one, i heard a mother in law say that her grand daughter was the most beautiful among the rest of the little girls in the picture. those girls were her cousins from her mother's side!

  12. LOL.. well, I don't have that problem.. my daughter is my mini-me.. no matter where I am, people are shocked that she looks just like me....

and it's a good thing too.. her Dad is a good looking man, but he wouldn't be a pretty girl...

  13. The reason for this is she will remember when your husband was little, and of course, she will see him in the baby.  She will see little nuances and movements that will remind her of when he was a baby, or someone else in the family.  Unfortunately, she didn't know you when you were a baby or know your family, so she couldn't say that she sees that.  It's not necessarily a dig against you, she's just wrapping herself in the warm, cozy past.

She probably also wants to take credit for this beautiful little bundle she sees in front of her.  What proud grandparent wouldn't?  You must have done a beautiful job!

  14. They forget the child is yours too.  I hate when they snatch my baby out of my arms without warning.  UGH!

  15. They are proud and happy about their grandchildren.  My in-laws used to say that and I would just laugh and say "well I've got the stretch marks to prove it".  I found it a compliment.

As a mother-in-law I have said the same thing, along with much of our family.  You are familiar with likeness of looks and actions of your children and your grandchildren.

There is nothing negative about it, just you are bursting with love and pride.

  16. Have not heard this one before.Been married 5 times never had one I could get along with yet so GOOD LUCK
