Why is it that albino animals(or humans) have red eyes?

  1. Animals that normally have black eyes, like rats, have dark pigment in their retina that causes the black colour. In albinism this pigment is not there, so you see the pink of the blood vessels in the retina.

    The human retina is pink anyway, so I don't think albinism affects it, but it can cause the iris (the part that gives people blue, green or brown eyes) to be pink.


  2. Eye colour is a product of melanin, a pigment also found in the skin and hair. Albinos have a deficiency of melanin, which is why their skin is pale, their hair white, and their eyes lacking in colour. In animals this usually shows up as red due to the blood vessels of the retina being visible. In humans, we have prominent irises, which are normally opaque enough to obscure the retina, but which are naturally a pale blue when lacking melanin.
