  1. Tony,

Actually, I respectfully disagree.  Here is why:  people are people.  The same horrible things have gone on for thousands of years.  Think about the domination of the Mongols of Asia approximately 800 years ago.  No technology going on then.  They were killing and raping willy nilly.  If you were in their way, you were toast and your women were used to breed little warriors.  They might not compare to the n**i's, but they sure compare to the genocide in Rwanda.

Next, consider how the whites treated the Indians in this country as of 200 to 300 years ago.  They actually started the scalping situation as a way to keep track of and pay bounty on the Indians that were killed.  Remember the trail of tears, reservations, and so on.  Not alot of technology back then.  Guns and wagons.  That's it.  Electricity didn't come along until after it was pretty much over with.

Next, consider how the Romans treated basically anyone that wasn't them.  The approximate slave population was almost as many as the non-slave population.  They frequently lived in dugout caves beneath the main home where they served.   Remember the parts where the fed the Christians to lions for entertainment. That was all roughly 2000 years ago, give or take a few hundred because the Roman empire lasted about 500 years.

Next - you want some real brutality without technology - remember the Aztecs and Mayans and all that business with cutting the beating heart out of virgins then tossing them down the pyramids to their death.  They used to kill hundreds at a time.  They thought they were doing the right thing at the time - as do pretty much everyone does.

I can go on and on.  Bottom line is - people haven't changed.  It just seems worse because all that stuff is so long ago that unless you are very curious about ancient history, you aren't going to stumble into that knowledge - at least not all at once.  Also - this country the US, has gone through a very long period of relative peace.  The little petty bs where we go to a country thousands of miles away is nothing compared to WWI and WWII where pretty much almost everyone was affected in some way, and almost everyone knew someone that was dead because of it.  Even then - aside from Pearl Harbor, in neither case was our homeland invaded and held.   So - we are somewhat isolated and spoiled compared to war torn areas of the world.  However, that would be more the 'norm' than the exception.   Someday, it's coming though.  It's a matter of time.   That's the way of the world, and that's why I vote for whoever will support the strongest defense every single time.

    From Wikipedia:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_Empi...

Among the Western accounts, R. J. Rummel estimated that 30 million people were killed under the rule of the Mongol Empire. The population of China fell by half in fifty years of Mongol rule. Before the Mongol invasion, Chinese dynasties reportedly had approximately 120 million inhabitants; after the conquest was completed in 1279, the 1300 census reported roughly 60 million people.[28] David Nicole states in The Mongol Warlords, "terror and mass extermination of anyone opposing them was a well tested Mongol tactic."[29] About half of the Russian population died during the invasion.[30] Historians estimate that up to half of Hungary's two million population at that time were victims of the Mongol invasion.[31]
