  1. Very easy answer. Thats because back then gas was less than 1.50 a gallon. The government would have added all kinds of taxes to push it up to 4 dollars a gallon. Sort of like cigarettes. But because the gas itself is 4 dollars a gallon it would be very hard to tax it much more.

  2. The Democrats want $5/gal gasoline because it promotes their alternative fuels agenda and global warming fight.  That is why they are opposed to off shore drilling, new refineries, and ANWR drilling.  Problem is the idea that global warning is caused by CO2 is highly suspect since only about 3% of the CO2 is man made.  We've been on a global warming trend for more than 10,000 years except for a brief respite in the middle ages.  There weren't that many autos and coal plants 10,000 years ago.  The truth is that the ocean is a huge CO2 sink that releases CO2 wherever the sun heats it up.  Mr. Gore failed to point out in his movie that the rise in CO2 lagged global warming instead of leading it making his assumption highly suspect.  The likely culprit is the sun and there isn't very much we can do about that except shoot ourselves in the foot by shutting down industrial production.  Volcanos also produce prodigious amounts of CO2.  Maybe Mr. Gore will propose filtering those.

  3. That's politics for you.

  4. Also, if you look at the makeup of our atmosphere, CO2 is like .03 of a %.

Aren't we being arrogant to believe we can "change" the planet? Even if we do reduce our CO2, nothing is stopping China or India or other nations from polluting. They don't care. Wasn't it just a few years ago there was talk of another Ice age, and now it's global warming even though world temperatures have gone down in the past few years. So where is the warming? The planet has natural cycles of warming and cooling, most of which depends upon the cycles of the sun (sun spots) not what we are doing here.

  5. Because they aren't smart enough to figure out that Bush isn't running for president in 2008.

  6. I have heard that the Left wants $5 per gallon. They are afraid that we will run out of oil.
