Question:

Why is it that even with all the knowledge and skill of all martial arts, a human can't win against a grizzly?

Assuming that an athletic and super macho (like WWE wrestler macho) and has mastered all the martial arts (hand-to-hand, weapon, speed kill combatives, etc), why can't he kill a mother Grizzly bear with just his bare hands, no weapons or armors. Maybe, just a fur coat to make it even.

  1. As silly of a question as it is, I'm going to try to answer your question as seriously as I can.

First, let's think about how big a grizzly bear is. Just think of a cute, cuddly brown thing? With 800lbs in the low-end average, and 8' tall on it's hind legs, it's not exactly your average punching bag.

The bear's bone and muscle structure makes it so that it's head is extremely resistant to multiple types of forces, even in the head.

Compounded with that fact, it is basically impossible for a human to generate enough force to torque a grizzly's skull enough, or provide enough direct blunt force trauma to knock on out, let alone kill it barehanded.

Then, grappling with it effectively is pretty much out of the question, because other than having long and powerful arms, starting out on its back, and having applied a palm-to-palm rear choke before it starts resisting, you're kind of screwed on that aspect as well. (Although I have heard an urban legend in recent years of a guy who uchi-mata'd a young small bear in the mountains, forcing it to run away.)

Let's now think about the offensive capabilities of the bear compared to the average fighting-fit human.

    Strength? Bear

    Teeth? Bear

    Speed? Bear

    Huge Paws with claws? Bears

    Defense? Bear

Did I mention the teeth? Bears

Neck strike, eye gouge, and knee it's groin all you like. I'm betting on Bear via general destruction.

Hope that answered your question... but if not, you can actually find out for yourself. Sneak into the bear pit at your local zoo with a friend and camera in tow, and you can see why humans don't really win fights against bears and most other large strong animals. :)

  2. Whats the point in mastering weapons if you can't use them?

  3. It's because martial arts aren't made to fight off large viscous animals. Without any weapon besides your bare-fist it would be like a dog vs a lion. And besides that a bear has sharp teeth, sharp claws, and much more strength. For a human to have any chance at defeating a bear would only be if the bear was wounded or just didn't find you worth it.

  4. This is your second question like this. Do you have a fetish for seeing people ripped apart by a bear?

Secondly THIS DOES NOT BELONG IN THE MARTIAL ARTS SECTION!!!!!!

Edit for IAN - What have you been smoking? Trained MMA professionals in the UFC miss far larger targets all the time, especially moving targets. Do you know how hard it is to anticipate which way something will move during a fight, let alone hit something the size of a quarter while it's doing it?

Maybe if you actually had hold of its head and could place your fingers there you could, but this would mean you were getting gutted while you are doing it. Yes a bears claws can gut you easily.

  5. Contrary to everyone else here, I say, they can. That is, directly referring to your question, if someone had real skill in many martial arts, I believe there are things that could be done.

For example, if a bear has no eyes, it won't be easy for it... A trained martial artist can strike quicker than a snake can, so it is technically possible.

  6. Because size in the long run matters. Humans are designed to be many faceted. The Grizzly is designed to bring down dinner that weighs as much as 5 WWF wrestlers. The grizzly hasn't  figured out the spear or gun yet. If they do we are in deep trouble.;o

  7. That is the stupidest question i've ever heard

Martial Arts don't train you to fight animals that are 4 times your own weight...and y should they?

Bears (and other big animals) are built to be survivors

Muscule mass, claws, teeth etc. Humans aren't meant to do that.

Humans are meant to do things that bears can't do. Like drive, drink, drink & drive at the same time, have thumbs...and a shatload of others

  8. a human CAN kill a grizzly with a weapon- its called a shotgun or firearm.

beyond that any large combat weapon like a spear or sword or axe is a rough battle.

unarmed I would say its a near-impossiblity to defeat a bear in combat- you would have a chance if the circumstances were such that the bear was not feeling threatened, you didn't somehow trigger its belief that you were prey (running from a bear will do that) and of course if its cubs weren't injured.

the only chance even the strongest human and most skilled unarmed fighter would have agaisnt a bear is if none of these factors are present, then one might be able to scare the bear off or hurt it fast enough with a few shots to convince it that its a worthless fight and retreat, since you are not food, the bear is not threatened and its cubs are not threatened. A bear or ANY predator will weigh the benefits of such combat against bieng injured because bears don't suffer from ego trips, they know they must remain healthy in order to get food. any predator be it a lion, tiger, etc. will do the same.

grizzlys have been known to eat other bears too- so a lot depends on its hybernation cycle.

so basically you need the bear at its weakest and least interested in fighting (right after hybernation will likely result in its seeing you as food).

pure physically speaking, bears are stronger, quicker extremely stubborn and have natrual weapons (teeth and claws) that can rip the h**l out of you.  Bears have been known to pursue thier "prey" up trees when it gets a bout of "stubborness".

anyone who thinks a human can just "beat" a bear as a regular thing doesn't know grizzly bears. weak points on humans (which an MAist trains against) are not going to be the same on a bear.

also pulling a weapon and enraging the bear or fighting back will cause it to fight more- you can't "tap out" or "throw in the towel" against a bear.  well you can, it would just involve 6 peope carrying whats left of you in a closed-casket funeral.
