  1. When one of your senses isn't being used as much (for example, sight at night) another one makes up for it. So your hearing makes up for your sight and you are more alert.

  2. because you are trying to sleep and you are focussing more on all the noises

  3. At night there usually is less ambient noise due to the fact that there are usually fewer things making noise at the same time.  If one thing is making noise, crickets in the woods, or a party up the street, lets say it is easier to hear.  That same noise can get drowned out by other things making noise making is less distinguishable.

  4. Because it is still. People (decent ones), are sleeping, so therefore there is less traffic. Less people noises.

  5. Air density changes. The hot air dissipates into space and is replaced by a colder air mass. There will be differences due to alltitude, humidity, and dust.

  6. No factories, tractor trailers, motorcycles, etc. to make a steady flow of nonsense as usual during the day; instead, when night falls so do most of us making you hear more of the natural sounds that our unnatural cover up.
