Question:

Why is it that female athletes rarely have their weight listed on sports cards?

I often glance through my son's SI Kids magazine, and I've noticed that rarely, (Maybe 20% of the time) are women's/girl's weights listed along w/their height on the card insert page. If women athletes insist (rightfully so) on being viewed in the same manner as their male counterparts, then why do they agree upon perpetuating the perception that they are not equal, with this inane ommission?

  1. Why do male athletes often list themselves as being taller than they actually are? For example, someone who is about 5'10" is listed as being six feet tall. Why is that?

  2. There was an article in the New York Times within the past year about women athletes and weight.  The opinion you noted was expounded upon in the article.  If I remember correctly, weight takes on a different dimension with women than with men, and can be such a sore point for them.

But make no mistake about it.  Despite such sentiments, and their public announcements of what is inside one's heart that counts, I remember vividly women making comments about men's height, or lack of it, and weight, too much or to little of it.  So the chickens have come home to roost.

  3. Strangely enough, I've wondered this about NCAA women's athletes.  It's a double standard I guess.  I don't really know how else to explain it.  Who cares what their weight is?  Most of them are going to be in very good shape.  I don't see why it'd be offensive.  Nobody cares that we know about male athletes' weights.

  4. I guess if they listed it they'd be called misogynists and they wouldn't want the bad publicity.

  5. It's not an inane ommission. I'm sure that males who are uncomfortable with displaying their weight are not required to do so. There is also a difference in how weights are perceived. For men, weight is an indication of fitness as well as strength. Their weight in relation to their height should generally tell you how much musculature they have. For women, weight is an indication of how much they don't fit the "perfect" mold of a model. Muscle weighs more than fat so these fit women end up looking "fatter" than those anorexic models. You may think it's unfair that women demand equality but don't deliver when asked about their weight but I think it's unfair that men expect women to weigh a certain amount and look a certain way when the "perfect" figure is not attainable for most women

  6. Most are lards and dont want people knowing.
