Question:

Why is it that if I say that I think that a rapper is overrated...?

...people automatically take that to mean that I must not like that rapper?

There are several rappers that I don't think are as good as many people generally tend to credit them but I still like them. If I think Nas is a top 15 rapper instead of a top 5, shouldn't that show that I still dig what he does but just not as much as other people?

  1. Thats what i was getting at on my Nas q last week, "Youcould say any other artist is overrated and still have respect for him... except Nas"- but that *REALLY* can apply to almost any GOAT rapper, Nas was just my main focus

EDIT: lol... Ninja, "It's seeming like he's got to the point in this section where saying anything short of "He's the GOAT" is... well, blasphemy"- is that a coincidence or could i be on the right track???

DOUBLE EDIT: I dont think i'm paying *THAT MUCH* attention... i mean after all we're answering the same question, and you said something that went along with the quote i put, thats all it really was.

  2. IDK Some people just take you, not ranking their #1 emcee as your #1 emcee as a personal insult.

  3. thats true some rappers (like nas) are great rappers but they sound the same in every song

its just an opinion and some people take offense

  4. You're right.. If anyone says Tupac is overrated then people ride on their nuts, it's exactly like you said, people have him in the top 5, I have him in the top 10/15....

Thumbs down for Choc1.. Sorry it's my job..

  5. its your opinion..

theres a big difference between saying an artist is overrated, and sayin their not good..

But i can understand how someone could misenterpite(Sp?) that..

I think Lil Wayne is waaaay overrated, but do i like him?

sure, hes makes good songs sometimes.

  6. I know what you mean, I really like lupe fiasco but i think he's overrated as well.

  7. The term “overrated” means glorified and overvalued, that word boasts quite a bit of judgment, so when you say that a rapper is “Overrated” it’s not a dispassionate statement in the least. Not only are you implying that you don’t particularly favor that artist, but that they do not deserve the favor of anyone else and that’s unacceptable. At least it can easily be perceived this way... In the case of Nas you’re particularly faulty... Nas overrated? Blasphemy…But that’s another discussion.

Even though I disagree with some of your viewpoints, at the end of the day, Hip Hop needs these kinds of internal check and balances. Keep up the good work.

I doubt I'm over-exaggerating Omagus I have clearly defined the meaning of this term, If you find the word you've put to use to be Borderline extreme, I suggest you find one that accurately explains your position.

Got It Omagus, even though that's a very immature and narrow definition of the word, let's move on..

so you don't think Nas deserves to be in the Top 5 greatest Emcees of all time? That's Perfectly fine.. I DO.. not only does he deserve to be in the top 5, he deserves the #1 spot.

    It's a Cat's Game .

  8. I agree. I too happen to think Nas is overrated, but I also think he's very talented.

The reason I think he's overrated is because many of his fans (not ALL of them, but many) act like he can do no wrong, whereas I think he has been inconsistent and has not always maintained the level of lyrical greatness others seem to think is present in ALL his work .

I also don't understand why he's treated as some kind of prophet. I have the same issue with Tupac in that respect. A few "positive" songs here and there do not constitute a career based on helping the people of the world live better lives. In fact, I would hesitate to credit anyone with the things Nas and Tupac seem to get credited for unless they'd given their lives to worthy causes. Neither of them are MLK, Mother Theresa or Gandhi, yet *some* of their fans act like they're those things all rolled into one.

But... again, those are just criticisms I personally have of how they are viewed. It doesn't for a second mean I don't like them.

In fact, I have no problem with Nas being on a top 10 list, I think it's perfectly reasonable to put him on one. But I don't think he's the greatest. Just my opinion.

Actually, what makes both Nas and Tupac overrated the most in my eyes is people's reaction to you even making that statement.

  9. In my opinion, Ninja made the best point here.  The word is a point of contention for me because it does carry a negative connotation.  The literal meaning of the word is not what most people think of when you say it in concordance with a GOAT contender.

If I am posting about an artist that I may feel is overrated, I come up with alternate words to explain my thoughts or feelings about them so that my point is clearly made.  This avoids the squabble or misconstrued opinions that some may perceive.

Edit:  Omagus, you are right as far as the term goes, the definition is what it is, that in no way changes the way people perceive it when coupled with the GOAT contenders.

  10. The reason that happens is because  so many people out there think the world revolves around them and for you to state there favorite rapper is overrated questions... ah **** . If they don't respect your opinion just tell them to p**s off.

  11. well generally when you say someone is overrated, doesnt that kinda lead people on to think you dont like that particular person? thats like if i make a thread saying "lil wayne is overrated", are u honestly gonna think i like him?

like wit your example, u believe nas is in "a" top 15, rather than 5, that doesnt equal overrated in my eyes.

  12. People are really really sensitive on here, so it's hard to say anything really.

  13. I can see your point. I don't ever place 2pac and biggie at the top of my G.O.A.T list but I 'm sure others would probably feel I didn't appreciate them as artist and even equate placing them on such a high pedestal as if this is the ultimate regard. I again understand your point and believe it falls in the realm of personal opinion. I recall you not agreeing with my admiration for El-P production in the past (The actual question escapes me at the moment) but I didn't get but hurt about it. I guess it's not that important to me and I like to discover new things. Great question by the way. Glad you brought this up.

  14. Yes ur right!

Overrated means they get too much credit,  as much as i love him i think Jay z is overrated, but hes overrayed for the right reasons!

But then theres stuff like lil wayne and **** like that that is ovverated for the wrong reasons..

Like i dont praticularly like Rakim but i still have alot of respest for him and what hes done.

  15. Why wouldn't you like Nas?

  16. I know, I live in SoCal, and I don't see what's so great about 2Pac, Snoop, and Ice Cube...I prefer DJ Quik overall.

*And I also think that Cube hasn't been dope since "Death Certificate", but that's my opinion...and who am I?

  17. I feel you on this point. Some people's simple minds arbitrarily skip over that broad grey landscape between "stan" and "hater". You gotta be one extreme or the other in a lot of folks' opinions. Every MC I like can't be my FAVORITE MC. The concept of being simply a fan (and not some obsessed, nut-hugging addict) is foreign, I guess.

  18. Because people like to stick up for the artist/group they like. They don't like to hear that their favorite artist is under-rated or that someone doesn't like them. If I said that your favorite artist wasn't that good or was over-rated you would probably try to defend him/her, and you should.
