  1. Because on forms like that you are single until married :) a boyfriend doesent count x

  2. Because as a girlfriend even a live in one you have no legal rights/status in regard to your boyfriend.

  3. Because you are single...............ie you are not married!

  4. I haven't seen that on an application form for many years, and if I saw it now I don't think I'd answer!  Whose business is it?

You're right that living with a partner should be an option.  Think about the reason for them asking this question ... they're probably asking to find out who your next-of-kin would be in an emergency, or perhaps if you have children so that they can be sure that you won't bear the *sole* responsibility of being available for them ... in both of these cases, "living with a partner" is different than the other options provided, as your situation is more akin to being married than being single.

  5. It doesn't really mean single as such.

It means not married, engaged or widowed.  But there isn't any word in English for that so they put "single"

  6. Simple, the law states that unless you are married and have a certificate of marriage to prove it, then you are classed as single. End of.

  7. I hate that .I live with my boyfriend and we have a baby together and I still have to say single

  8. You can't have it both ways. Your either single or you are married. Anybody can Live together and the only people that benefit are the blokes because they can clear of anytime.

  9. You can say you are 'married' because in English Common Law that is your status - you are living with a partner as though you were a married couple and are treated as such in Law.

I recommend you read the next link very carefully.  I'm not a lawyer, but have always believed [know] that here in UK there are lots of marriage statuses which are recognised in English Law and one of these is what is called Common Law Marriage.  You do not have to go thru' a religious ceremony or sign a document to say you are married.  You choose your own status and not the State.
