Why is it that lots of Atheists care so much about spelling and grammar on R&S?

Why is it so important that every word in a perfectly sensible question has to be spelled correctly before you answer without complaining about the spelling? I mean its only the internet why is such a big deal? you can still understand and answer the question. Only the Atheists seem to care... sometimes some people won't even answer a perfectly decent question but instead go ahead and complain about spelling.

  1. Atheists just aren't as lazy and poorly educated as other people, I guess.

I can't imagine apologizing for that.

  2. We value education.See the difference?

  3. Hello,

Funny question. I don't think it is fair to just pick on atheists. There are probably a lot of people with various beliefs that correct spelling too. But I have noticed as well that a lot of people do seem to be picky about spelling on Yahoo Answers hehe.

It is not that so many people can't spell (in my opinion), I think that people just hurry to type & since it is only yahoo answers, they aren't concerned with minor misspellings or typos, or grammatical issues.

Even though they have a built in spell checker, I type questions & answers so quickly, that I don't bother with it. In my opinion it isn't always necessary. People get the point, and that is all that is needed. In fact, I never use spell check or re-read my responses or questions.

Just like that time I seen this cool website that stated as long as the first & last letters are right, the others can be scrambled a bit & people can still read it.

Jsut like tihs, if you konw what I maen? lol

  4. Sorry but it is not only atheists who care.  Intelligent people from all religions (and lack of) care.

  5. Apathy and poor grammar shows ignorance which leads to disrespect.

Why should I respect what you say if you don't even care enough to spend 2 seconds reading it over?

And not everybody here has a phd in english language. Your grammar doesn't even need to be perfect. But if you confuse 'two' with 'too' then of course you're going to get some criticism.

  6. Is it any surprise when we think that religion is butchery of the intellect?

  7. Those of us who graduated from the eighth grade are just that way.

  8. They need to take the log out of their eye before taking the speck out of yours.

  9. Not strictly true, most people on this don't like to see bad grammar and spelling, i don't mind a few misspellings or typos but i cant stand when people "writ liek dis"

  10. "Only the atheists seem to care"

    Sorry, lie right there.

And most people answer the question anyway. But it speaks a lot about someone's intelligence if they can't even use the spell-check function.

  11. Yes, it's only the internet, but it's difficult to take a person seriously if they don't take the time to make sure they are spelling words correctly. I mean, if you are truly passionate about what you are doing and writing, don't you want to make sure it's done properly?

I'm Christian, by the way, but I have skipped over questions because of spelling before.

  12. they like to look smart but humility is the beginning of salvation not intelligence or IQ

    The least shall be first

  13. "its only the internet."

The Internet is almost everybody these days.  And there is a noticeably strong correlation between literacy and strength of argument.

  14. Blame it on higher education and a love of learning.

  15. I am an atheist and I do not point out spelling or grammatical errors because I make them myself. I use spell check but it doesn't always catch everything. I do not like trying to read Q&A's that are in "text speak" or every other word is misspelled. If you make one or three mistakes, no big deal to me. But at least make sure it is understandable.

  16. Even if it is "only the internet" as you put it, people still care about grammar and spelling. I loathe "text speak" when it is used to answer questions on the internet.

Caring about things like this denotes a sign of intelligence, and it is not exclusive to atheists.

  17. Atheist idol worship themselves because since there is no God, all thatis left to worship is themselves and don;t diss my answer, I use ot be an atheist so donlt say I don't know what I am talkign about, all this talk about all christians being brainwashes and christians beating you over the head with a bible.and fearing that we are all brainwashed and will take your freedom away, honestly, yu sound liek a bunch of paranoid mormons and i use to be mormon by the way as well, if you were so smart, just as I was when i was an atheist, I didn't let what I considered brainwashed peopel bother me, so why do you???

  18. I'm not an atheist and I can't stand bad grammar. When somebody types in 1337 speech, can't spell, and uses way too much punctuation it makes the question difficult to understand and read. Plus it gives me headaches.

Besides, there's a spell check right there so there isn't any excuse for misspelled words. It's not exactly 'hard to find/use' either.

*And as stated in previous answers, bad grammar makes one seem stupid and immature. Chances are you are proabably also prone to not be taken seriously. If you can't type correctly, you probably shouldn't be on Y!A.

  19. Just as Christians try to save us from h**l, we try to save them from faulty spelling and bad grammar. Neither of us seem to be making much progress though...

  20. Language is an incredibly powerful tool that can be easily dulled by misuse.

Proper spelling and grammar ensure that people will understand the intent and purpose of your question.  Poor grammar and spelling allow for ambiguity.

  21. It's only the Internet?  Since we can not see or hear you, our only impression of you is imparted in your writing.

What would you think of an author that publishes a book full of grammatical and spelling errors.  Does that suggest to you the author is intelligent and thoughtful?  I don't think so.

  22. Because, many Christians want to be taken seriously and yet, have a spelling skills of a 8 y/o

How can i take seriously an 8 y/o and on top of it, a completely unreasonable argument,

Besides, the spell-checker is RIGHT there..

  23. Even Yahoo made a big deal out of it by adding the spell check feature. So use it.

  24. Education.

  25. only cristain thinks that speling isnt importatn.

  26. Okay, image if the entire internet - every site, was covered with "l33t"

Everything, including government and information sites, advertisements, movie sites, everything.

"Just the internet?" I would go ******* crazy...

  27. I want to know why people think this is an atheist thing. Back when I still called myself a Christian, I asked a question about why peoples spelling and grammar were so atrocious. Someone then angrily accused me of being an atheist. Needless to say, I was thoroughly confused.

Anyway, it's not just atheists. Any of us with a love of the written word hate to see it butchered. It's like watching someone urinate on a priceless painting.

  28. Despite modern teachers telling people that spelling and grammar don't matter as long as the reader gets the gist of it, I remain firm in the belief that you should learn to use English (or your native language) before going further into the world.

  29. I'm not an Atheist, and I care.  If you're not intelligent enough to spell words correctly and use proper grammar, then at least use the freaking spell checker!  It's right there!!!  By not using the spell checker, you show yourself to be either very lazy or very stupid.  Either way, it takes something away from your question or answer.

  30. i agree with u it just internet not exam. and for everyone information i'm an english grammar teacher. and i don't care how people write in the internet unless if taking on line test besides the internet is an informal writing. also it seems that many people in r&s give dumbs down for saying your beliefs and i'm not talking just about christian beliefs, i'm talking about everyone point of view. why are people so ignorant in the r&s section?

  31. The fact that you detect that Atheists seem to care about quality in craftsmanship... even for "just" a question on the internet.... is telling of their overall grasp of the finer things in life.
