I'd imagine that most of the older Royal women don't do tricks hence the need to look elsewhere.

Because if the female members had mistresses there would be no fun in life.  Queen Victoria was well known as a straight lady but it appears to be coming out that she had at least two boyfriends one of them an Indian and this back in the days of rampant racialism.  The other one a Scot - stirring up even murkier waters.

As a result both partners take lovers on the side to get what they lack in their marriages.

For the same reasons commoners do.They can.Adulterous affairs are nothing new among many a socio-economic group.Men tend to be more known for their affairs,while women's affairs were kept quiet.

Many marriages were arranged marriages,alliances for power and money,so affairs of the heart  filled in emotional voids.Divorces generally are still a last-choice made.
