Because they (christians) based most (all) their discoveries and innovations on the initial physics, geometry, mathematics, medical, astrological findings  that Islamic scholars initiated from 6th to 15th century AD.  What i am trying to say here is that the innovations and discoveries that we see today is not the work of a tribe, nation, religion, cast but the product of efforts by all human race. http://www.muslimheritage.com/day_life/d...

Because prior to the First Industrial Revolution, the Church still had such a stranglehold that most engineers and scientists in the West were Christians.

Christianity has been here for the last 2000 years, and lately in the most scientifically advanced  ( Western ) countries, so it naturally follows that a goodly proportion of 'modern' inventions would be by Christians. But what makes you think that inventions/discoveries made ( without a great deal of scientific knowledge ) by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Indians, Arabs, Chinese, etc., were so insignificant? E.g. the wheel?
