Why is it that people can't use the correct word?

Question

I'm talking about words like your and you're, then and than, etc. You're taught this in elementary school, it's easy! Only Appalachians and people in the inner cities where the teachers don't give a **** because they're just trying to stay alive, even have the remotest excuse, and even some of them manage to do it correctly! Why is it that people you'd think were perfectly smart and well-educated can't manage it?
