  1. I don't know. I jjust had this discussion with a friend of mine. Her son had a summer reading list and the Golden Compass was on it. I asked if The Chronicles of Narnia was ever on the list and she looked at me like I had 3 heads and said "NO! Those books promote religion!" Well, the Golden Compass books promote atheism...I'm not seeing the difference. Why is it ok to promote unbelief but not ok to promote belief?

  2. Education should be about knowledge and life skills, not superstition and fairy tales. If an individual then wishes to adopt a 'faith', that is up to him/her.

  3. god taught in school?

    what does that mean exactly!

    which god you talking about?

hindu god, christian god, muslim god etc etc etc

you cant teach one with out the other! but believers only want theres taught! so theres no point let the children learn through there parents!

religion is more like a hobbie any way now!

nobody seams to follow the rules of there own religion!

youd be teaching kids to break rules!

kids should be taught that there are various BELIEFS AND FAITHS!

not that it is fact that there is a god!

    as its impossible to prove!

  4. Why don't we start teaching Wicca in schools while we're at it? Right down to how to perform the rituals. And why stop there? Lets teach what Scientologists believe and so on and so forth...

Just because someone believes something doesn't mean we all do you are no more right than I am and if christian parents are SO worried about the "lies" there children learn in schools then let the parents teach the children.

So long story short: Question: "Why don't we teach creationism in school?"

Answer: The same reason we don't teach the idea that we where brought to earth by an evil alien dictator in a giant airliner then blown up with a hydrogen bomb.

PS: Not trying to compare Wicca to Scientology (seeing as how I am Wiccan) I'm just trying to make a point.

  5. it also means keeping the Church out of the State..............if you want a child to have a religious education then send them to a specialised religious school.....

  6. People fail to realize what a Scientific Theory actually is:

"As used in science, a theory is an explanation or model based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning, especially one that has been tested and confirmed as a general principle helping to explain and predict natural phenomena. Before a theory is given any credence in the scientific community, it must be subjected to "peer review." This means that the proposed theory must be published in a legitimate scientific journal in order to provide the opportunity for other scientists to evaluate the relevant factual information and attempt to duplicate any experimental procedures involved."

Only evolution fits that. No other theory about evolution comes close to a valid theory

    EDIT:

"seperating chruch and states means keeping the state out of the church, not the other way around...

    Um...no. It's a two-way street. Someone needs to pick up a government book...like now!

  7. bc even the media is trying to desensitise our kids AND ADULTS and now they are getting a head start with the kids and not teach bout God, (AT ALL)the Bible strickly tells you to train up a child when they are young, and they wont depart when they get older. so they (the illuminatic media) water down children with Harry potter and water down adults with Star Wars.....etc. youll get it. research......seek and you will find.

  8. Because it is one groups view of God. If you want to teach religion in school it should be an overview of all religions, not a Christian brain washing session, you can go to church for that.

  9. "seperating chruch and states means keeping the state out of the church, not the other way around..."

No.It's a separation of both.Besides,it's the 21st century,so it's more like the church out of government

If you want God taught in schools, don't you think that other people's God should be taught in schools as well? Or do you just want your precious God to be taught in school?

What part of secular don't you understand?

Public schools are funded by the government who use tax payer money. I don't want tax money to go to funding some stupid theory from some stupid book created by Bronze Age men who didn't know what an atom was.

Do you get it now? Evolution is science. Creationism is not.

Evolution is a work in progress

@ pottytrainer, you can still believe in your religion while being taught Evolution. It's not the same when you're being taught Creationism.

Goodness gracious, why can't people use their freaking brains!!!!!

  10. Because of the seperation of Church and State. Public schools are tax-supported, so putting "God" in a public school cirriculum would be government endorcement of a single religion, Christianity, which wouldn't be good.

The fact that God doesn't exist is another problem with teaching it. We try to teach things that are true in school cirriculums.

"seperating chruch and states means keeping the state out of the church, not the other way around..." No, it doesn't. We have a Democractic Republic government. We don't want our government to become a theocracy. One great thing about America is the freedom of any religion, or lack there of. It is a two-way street.

  11. Sure, why not?

But while they're teaching about the 2,850+ gods out there when do you think they'll get around to reading, writing and arithmetic?

    http://www.godchecker.com/

Certainly you don't mean the schools should only teach about *your* god, do you?

  12. Because the seperation of church and state. Means church stays out of state and state stays out of church. Simple as that. If you want your kids to learn about your God at a school, there's private schools for that. Besides that is a private matter and should be taught by the parents if the parents so choose.

  13. because a religiously based idea (church) should not be taught in a government funded public school (state) due to the fact that it is unconstitutional! by the way which god?

Achelois, Achelous, Acheron, Achilles, Achthonian, Acidalia, Adamanthea, Adephagia, Adonis, Adrastea, Adrasteia, Aeacos, Aeacus, Aegaeon, Aegina, Aegle, Aello, Aellopos, Aeolos, Aeolus, Aer, Aesculapius, Aethalides, Aether, Aethon, Aetna, Agave, Agdistes, Agdos, Aglaea, Aglaia, Aglauros, Aglaurus,Agraulos, Agrotara, Agrotora, Aiakos, Aigle, Aiolos, Aither, Alcemana, Alcides, Alcmena, Alcmene, Alcyone, Alecto, Alectrona, Alexandra, Aloadae, Alpheos, Alpheus, Amalthea, Amaltheia, Amarynthia, Ampelius, Amphion, Amphitrite, Amphitryon, Amymone, Ananke, Andromeda, Antaeus, Antaios, Anteros, Anticlea, Antiklia, Antiope, Apate, Aphrodite, Apollo, Apollon, Arachne, Arcas, Ares, Arethusa, Argeos, Argus, Ariadne, Arion, Aristaeus, Aristaios, Aristeas, Arkas, Artemis, Asclepius, Asklepios, Asopus, Asteria, Asterie, Astraea, Astraeus, Atalanta, Ate, Athamas, Athamus, Athena, Athene, Atlantides, Atlas, Atropos, Attis, Attropus, Augean Stables, Augian Stables, Aurai, Autolycus, Autolykos, Auxesia, Bacchae, Bacchantes, Balius, Bellerophon, Bia, Bias, Boreads, Boreas, Briareos, Briareus, Bromios,Cadmus, Caeneus, Caenis, Calais, Calchas, Calliope, Callisto, Calypso, Cassandra, Castor, Cecrops, Celaeno, Celoneo, Ceneus, Cerberus, Cercopes, Cerigo, Cerynean Hind, Ceryneian Hind, Cerynitis, Ceto, Chaos, Charites, Charon, Charybdis, Cheiron, Chelone, Chimaera, Chimera, Chione, Chiron, Chloe, Chloris, Chronos, Chronus, Circe, Clio, Clotho, Clymene, Coeus, Coltus, Comus, Cottus, Cotys, Cotytto, Cretan Bull, Crius, Cronos, Cronus, Cybele,

or any of the thousands of more gods?

  14. umm If they taught God/Christianity they'd have to teach all religions, like Budhism, Islam and Judaism, etc. also there would be atheist/agnostics who do not wish there children to be taught religion, and of course some parents just wouldn't want their children being taught religion. I don't think religion should be taught in school at all. we've seen how mixing religion and politics goes, i know it's not the same, but still.

    -Tila.

  15. Supposedly by teaching about God, they are taking away the rights of certain children not to believe in God.  But they teach evolution and that isn't taking away the Christian's rights?  The world is just full of a bunch of hypocrites.

  16. Would you like it if they taught Allah in school?

    What about Vishnu?

    Odin?

Not everyone believes in the same God, and it's not fair to them. Also, public schools are secular. Separation of church and state and all that.

Edit: Uh, separation of church and state goes BOTH ways, dear. If they are combined at all, they aren't separated.

  17. No single religion should be taught in school, however, creationism as a scientific possibility should be taught just the same as evolution. The first guy said they only teach facts in school, well, why is evolution being taught?

  18. It's not that I don't want G-d taught in school.

I want ALL religions and spiritual paths taught, including Buddhism, Shintoism, and all paganism. Then children can make an unbiased, and well informed choice about what they choose to believe or not believe without one sided brainwashing.

  19. and who's version do you prefer? I think teach School child about how great FSM is, is far more beneficial so everyone should be taught it, don't matter if the belief is there in the parents or not, Force the Supreme FSM ON ALL.

LOL yeah I am joking, but it doesn't stop the fact that I wouldn't expect a Christian Parent to agree with their child being taught about something which is a belief not their own, not should you expect others to accept it either, I think debates on Ethics and Morality, would be far better, a more philosophical lesson than a religious lesson. Churches, and Mosques, and other religious institutions are there to teach religion, leave schools to teach what is needed like Math, English, and so on.

  20. School is for educating our children with fact based knowledge.

Church is the place for religious mythology.

  21. God can't be taught.

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

    Only God can "teach" God.

Only God can give revelation. That is self evident.

It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.

Besides, man naturally hates God and does not want to be subjected to Him. That ought to be obvious. Just glance at the world, ... and your own heart. Why do you think man has made up so many religions to keep from knowing the true God?

See all the clamour here about everybody's own "god."

Yet still God promises to any that should seek Him with their whole heart He will be found of them.

Oh how so few do, to their utter self condemnation.

That people don't know God confirms.

The simple answer is that man hates God. You can hardly pass a question here without testimony to that in the answers.

And who is sufficient to "teach" God?

And how can those who do not know God "teach" Him?

No doubt there won't be a shortage of arrogance to think they can. Man without God is not short of arrogance.

Has God not withdrawn His restraints to the intent that the heart of man will be more fully revealed? Now the modern man of sin is revealed who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped, and now man is his own god and sits as God.

You see it here every day.

How then can he allow his Enemy to be preached in the schools?

  22. When I was going to school, they set aside time in the day for something called "church school". The parents would sign up their child for the god that they wanted their children to learn about, but if they didn't want them to learn about any god, then they would have a study period while the others were learning about the god of their choice.

  23. I think it's more a case of teaching people the alternative as well as the orthodox.

In other words, teaching creation in RE, evolution in the science class and explaining why the discrepancy.

    It's quite straightforward, really.

  24. heres the point.

    which God?

    The Catholic one?

    The Lutheran one?

The ... say Jehovah's Witnesses one?

    The Jewish one?

    The Muslim one?

how about the Wiccan ones or perhaps the Hindu ones?

why should ONE be taught over another? would you want it to be taught as much if it wasn't your version of God?

or would you feel opressed that you/your kid had to be taught someone else's god?

    edit:

you might want to read the story a bit closer. part of the "separation of church and state" thing  is to be freed from the tyrrany of the church of england. not just to prevent the state from determining the church.... it DOES go both ways.

  25. No, it means keeping the two separate. I personally have no problem with god being taught in school, as long as the Jewish faith, Hinduism, Buddhism, and every form of Pagan belief that people in this world practice is also taught, but then our kids would only be learning about religion and not about those unimportant things like reading, writing and arithmetic.

  26. SepArating (learn how to spell) means keeping the church out of the state (reading a ******* book for once in your life). Just because you believe in God doesn't mean everyone else does. How would you feel if the next president decided to teach Atheism in ALL schools? Would YOU get bent out of shape?

  27. Why is it that people who want religion to be taught in school always assume that their own religion would be the one taught?

I'm wondering how fast you'd be in the principal's office if your kids were being taught to pray to the Hindu gods, or even if the teacher was reading the Book of Mormon to the kids during reading time.

  28. When I was in school, we had comparative religion classes and were taught about all of the gods.Well most of them.

Your question should read "Why don't people want Christianity taught in schools?" Simple. It violates the First Amendment. See Abington vs. Schempp.

Your opinion on separation of religion and government is your own, albeit wrong. The Supreme Court has decided this issue over and over. In 2005, a federal court did the same and the defendants did not appeal the judge's ruling that they were trying to sneak religion into science class. See Kitzmiller vs. Dover

  29. First of all, not everyone believes in God.  We have freedom of religion in this country and that means that the state can't sanction a religion.  Teaching about God would violate that.  Have you ever thought that evolution was how God created the world?  Separating church and state means keeping the state out of the church and the church out of the state.  It's like you are saying that religions can tell the government and others what to do.  I'm an Episcopalian and I don't want to tell people who or what they can believe.  Is that what you want?  If it is, I suggest you find a county with a theocracy and go there.

  30. Years ago schools were pretty much free to celebrate Christian traditions- Christmas, Easter, etc. The reason?  The majority of the population was Christian.  With the influx of immigrants there are more and more non-Christian children in the schools.  In the same way that Christians don't want the other religious influences on their children, the non-Christians don't want the Christian influences.

The 'americans" (which you realize we are all descendants of people from other countries-that what America is made of) expect the immigrants to conform to our ways.  After all if we moved to those countries they wouldn't change their language and traditions for us.  The immigrants came here for freedom and don't want these other beliefs forced upon them.

The problem I see is that these beliefs and customs have been practiced by our country for so many years and now immigrants are expecting us to quit them because they don't like them.  At the same time we're supposed to teach our children more about their cultures and be sympathetic to their beliefs.

It's really a no win situation.

My personal belief is that if God were kept in the schools, some children who are never taken to church, never taught right from wrong, and live in horrible environments, might (just might) find a message of hope and be able to put their life on the right path.

  31. School is for teaching things like maths, science, languages and so forth, not for preaching religion.

Schools should be able to equally and fairly teach all their students regardless of their varied religious and cultural backgrounds, religion should only be taught as a subject, all religions and cultures should be included in that.

A school is not a church or a mosque, or temple of any kind. If a family wishes to bring their children up within a religion they should be capable of doing so at home, and in their places of worship, that's what they are for. Evolution  encompasses several aspects of science, learning science also teaches you how to question established theories in the correct manner, all scientific knowledge is an ongoing thing, subject to changes and additions when knew evidence is discovered, that's why it's so good, it does not have to be written in stone regardless of the evidence:)
