Why is it that people think that the US military can't defend its self anymore.....?

I mean every time I bring up helping Georgia people freak and go the US military can't were to weak and **** the Russians willl beat us...welll with that attude they willl but we have 350000 troops across Europe and with NATO we could easly beat them we jsut take 50000 NATO forces and help georgia(not attack the Russian homeland do like we did in the first Gulf war and jsut push the Russians back....the Russians arn't as strong as they usto and what they are doing is wrong I think we should help who else them who else agrees we have the power to help?

No freakin anti American answers either saying o the US will get its *** kiked russia can beat NATO to i want honest military veiws

why is it the responsibility of the US to be the police of the world? i understand that they are allies and that what is happening is wrong, but why should we get involved? when we get involved the rest of the world gets mad telling us that we're sticking our noses in their business. when we do nothing we get criticized for sitting idly by while something terrible happens. i think we should just mind our own business like everybody else and make them take responsibility so that they can see what we have to deal with and maybe... just maybe appreciate us a little more.

Unfortunately we are stretched to thin. We have our troops policing all around the world. We have forces in Asia just in case N. Korea decides to attack S. Korea or Japan and if China wants to attack Taiwan. Of course everyone knows that we're out in the Middle East doing occupations and keeping Iran in check. And now we have this Georgian-Russian War going on, we can't handle it all at the same time. We're not just talking about military strength but economically as well. We're struggling as it is right now.

??? The US military is the best trained and equipped in the world. I don't think people think the US military is weak, I just think they disapprove of it being used so much as well as the questionable justifications for its use.

The U.S. military is very strong, BUT we don't want to go there to start a world war, we could actually destroy Russia in 3 months, but that would just create a World War 3.

Years of unjust unnecessary war has depleted our forces. We can no longer recruit the numbers needed to enter into a large drawn out war.

Russia on the other hand doesn't have that problem. They have the population to throw wave after wave of men at the enemy until their enemies are just plain exhausted. Like they did in WW2,

Russia definitely isn't as powerful as it used to be but that doesn't mean you should underestimate it. Yes, if America attacks Russia we (England) well definitely help you but as for the rest of NATO, i'm not so sure. We should be care full though, if we attack Russia that's the of most of our supply of natural resource's.

The truth is that the Russian military is in horrible condition.  The ONLY force they have that are anywhere near fit are the nuclear forces.  They can't supply food and clothing to their soldiers stationed 100 miles outside Moscow.  About 2/3 of young Russian men evad the draft and mandatory military service.

Of course, on the other side of the coin on US, UK forces and the French Foreign Legion (not the regular French forces) from NATO, are close to being combat ready.

The answer to force is not always force.  Just because you think we should attack Russia (i do not think they will see the difference between us attacking them in Georgia instrad of the homeland), does not mean we should.  Our forces are already stretched in the middle east (longer rotations, less time at home) and in the end there is no benefit to us starting another war.

Yes, we theoretically could fight and probably win a war with Russia, however, Lets remember there has never been a war between two countries directly that both have nuclear capabilities.  I would not advocate for any Americans to die in this conflict.  Would you be OK fighting and dying to protect Georgia?  Would you be OK with American civilians being at risk of nuclear attack?

It is very, very simple. The draft took the best of the best to fight in ww2. even for korea but it is different now. russia does it the old fashioned way and most nations do it the old way.

i don't know what you call the modern way of an all volunteer force. only the elite units compare to the millions of single young men who stormed the beaches at normandy, iwo jimi and such. now they have so much different. all the special technology will not compensate for millions of boots and rifles we once had. now they can barely shift a few thousand troops to hand a few thousand rebels without huge debate and funding problems. eisenhower and macarthur or patton could never have guessed things would get so snarled and messed up.

As much as I hate to admit it, a lot of our fellow Americans are very weak these days. Look at the war in Iraq, we really have been doing very well all along. Think about it, we're fighting a war against a non-uniformed enemy - the civilians and "soldiers" look the same. In 5 years over there we've only lost a little over 4,000 soldiers. Don't get me wrong, I don't want any Americans to die, and my thoughts are with the families, but that is not a lot when you look at the number of soldiers we have had over there. Then there's the fact that we have enough missiles and firepower to destroy the entire world 3 times over. So if we were ever to be in a "US-vs-the world" situation we would still win. So to finally answer your question, it's the liberal media that likes to make us out to be a LOT weaker than we are. Yes, we have the military power to do whatever we want and help whoever we want. Don't be fooled by the media or people who are negative towards our country.

I love our country but usually don't agree with our decisions. This time I DO! We need to focus on ourselves and us going in to a depression. Another war, which I might add WILL end up being world war 3 will cost to much money an hurt us more than it will help. This is really none of our business as is most wars we go in to. We need to let other people make their own choices. You think we would allow others to tell us what to do? But we do it all the time because " It's not right what they are doing!"  We need to focus on our medical crisis, drug crisis, economic crisis, education crisis, and energy crisis not war!
