  1. because that would make him higher up then the queen and the queen is the ruler not prince philip

  2. Prince Phillip chose not to be called"king".

  3. His actual title is Prince Consort because he is married to the Queen. He received the title of "Prince Consort" from the Queen shortly after they were married. It is a special title because I do not think anyone else has ever had it as a title. In the past it was viewed just as a position, not a title. Elizabeth II was the one to make it a title.

He is in the line of succession not much later and very much out of his lifetime. He, like his wife, is also a descendent of Queen Victoria of Great Britain.

  4. Becasue we have a queen, not a king.  He is just the husband of the queen. NOT a king

  5. wasn't he a Greek prince before he married QE2 so why wouldn't he be after the wedding ...as for him being king of england, it has to be direct descendant of the reigning king/ queen - I think .... not sure

  6. Because the Queen hasn't kicked the bucket yet, and he's not the next in line.

  7. most answers above are basically correct; however, QEII had the power to ask Parliament to make him a king but decided not to due to the overwhelming hatred for everything Germanic at the time; and let's face it, adding to an already historically German bloodline by adding Macedonian/german blood wasn't a cool move.  Fortunately, Charles, as despicable as his reasons were, married a true Brit with centuries of British blood flowing thru her Royal veins and gave the Brits the first true Brit as a Royal Heir in over 180 years.   Before Diana, Eliz II's mum was the first person with even a modicum of brit blood running thru her veins.

as an afterthought I think the Brits are purely blessed that Charles wasn't allowed to marry Camilla and have their children ascend to the throne; can you imagine how truly unattractive those offspring would have been.   At least with Princess Diana the Brits will have attractive heirs to the throne.

  8. Philip is the spouse of a reigning queen. He was not heir to the throne of King George VI;Elizabeth was. Philip is Prine Consort, the title that the UK uses for the husband of a reigning queen;the UK DOES NOT use the title of King Consort. The title of king is considered higher than the title of queen and no one can bear a title higher than the reigning monarch's title, who happens to be a queen.

Philip is of royal birth himself,he is a prince of the Royal House of Schlesweig-Holstein-

Sonderburgh-Glucksburg,renamed Mountbatten in the UK.He is both second/third cousin to his wife, although the OFFICIAL statement is that they are third cousins.

And the title Prince Consort was used for Queen Victoria's husband, Albert,so it HAS been used before.

  9. Prince Philip is Consort to Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen was the eldest child of King Greorge VI and therefore upon his death she became the new monarch, head of state.

The person the queen married, Prince Philip, cannot become King, since this would have made him the monarch and thus head of state.

Same basic rule as was applied to Prince Albert, Prince Consort to HM Queen Victoria.

    vivat regina. . . .

  10. because he is not the monarch. have you ever played chess?

  11. Because Queen Elizabeth II rules in her own right, as successor to her father George VI. The consort to an English King is called a Queen, but she is not a queen regnant. The consort to an English Queen Regnant is usually called a Prince. The most recent two examples have been Prince Phillip, the Due of Edinburgh; and Queen Victoria's consort Prince Albert.

  12. If Prince Philip were King, he would be more powerful than Queen Elizabeth, which he is not.

  13. It's the Queen that's of royal blood, not him. So he cannot be king. Just like the bees, there is a Queen and there are the drones, not kings.

  14. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, therefore, her husband Prince Philip is her "Prince Consort." A prince consort, generally speaking, is a common term for the husband of a Queen Regnant, unless he himself also is a king in his own right.

The Queen may also bestow upon him the title "King Consort", which is entirely at the will of the Queen. King consort is a title given in some monarchies to the husband of a queen regnant. Nowadays, it is a symbolic title only, the sole constitutional function of the holder being similar to a queen consort, namely to produce an heir to the throne.

Spain, Portugal, England and Scotland have all had kings consort; however, since the rank of king normally outranks that of queen, in most monarchies the queen's husband is given the title of prince or prince consort instead.

Note: In the British monarchy, the husband of a female monarch does not have any recognized special status, rank, or privileges. In actual fact Prince Philip does play a major role in royal affairs, but this is not recognized in terms of his title. Interestingly enough, the wife of a male monarch (e.g. the Queen Mother was the wife of King George VI) takes on her husband's rank and style upon marrying, becoming Queen.

  15. This question has been answered many time before but ultimately he is his wife's consort, she is a Queen Regnant and the UK has Prince consorts when a Queen is on the throne not King consorts.

BTW Prince Philip is the Queen's consort but he is not "Prince Consort", his title is Duke of Edinburgh. The only Male Consort to bear the Title "Prince Consort" was Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria.

  16. Because historically a male monarch was the norm. When eventually females were allowed the honour, having a husband as King would infer superiority over the Queen. In actual fact, Prince Philip IS in line to the British Throne in his own right as a descendant of Queen Victoria. Unfortunately for him, he is so low down in the list that He will never in reality become King. Queen Mary, wife of George V and Grandmother to our present beloved Queen was also in line, in her own right as a descendant of George III. . However, The late Queen Mother was not of royal lineage and was never in line in her own right.

  17. The simple answer is as follows: traditionally, a woman is entitled to the rank and titles of her husband and not vice-versa. This is why the wife of a Mr is a Mrs, the wife of a prince is a princess, etc but not the other way around. It has little to do with *actual rank* because Elizabeth is the sovereign either way.

Philip is a prince consort, but not *the* Prince Consort because that is an official title.

  18. Traditionally the male is more important, so as it is the Queen who came to power then he has to be a Prince because if he were King he would be more important than her.

If it is the man who comes to power, eg William, he will be King and his wife will be Queen.

  19. He is married to the Queen and is not in the direct line of succession, therefore cannot be a King. His actual title is 'Prince Consort'. The same was true of Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, and Prince George, husband of Queen Anne.

On the other hand, a 'Queen Consort' can be married to a King. When Charles become King, Camilla will become Queen - although she may well decide not to use the title.
