I know someone that is in a relationship has a kid with the partner, they make about 130k a year and she gfets a full ride to college because her part of the income is only 20-30k. Well, I am married with two kids and applied for scholarship and fafsa they said I qualify for $0. My husband only made like 70k. Okay, so what also really bothers me is the college student get free college on taxpayers dollars is a major pot head, so yes the taxpayers pay for a high incomed family pot head to go to school. Just irritating.

  1. Being in a relationship and being married are two different things.  If this person is married and they make $130K a year there is no way they get govt funding beyond loans.  If she is single with $30k annual income and a child as a dependent she will get some Pell money.  She may even qualify for a couple of other things as well.

You on the other hand are married so you and your husband show all of your income together.  Unfortunately a family of 4 with 70K annual income knocks you out of Pell eligibility.

There are a lot of things that are not fair about the system of financial aid.  I could wax on for days about the subject, but for now it is the best system in place and we all have to live with it.

  3. First of all, I think a major issue is marital status.

I think that because you're married and your friend isn't?? that it makes a HUGE difference.

When you're married, your husbands income is your income and vice versa. When you're "single" but have dependents (kids) you're seen as making less and having more expenses.

That's just the way it works... and it has always been like that.

As for the person who gets the full ride, don't get frustrated. If they are a pot head, you should be happy that they aren't wasting their life away. At least they are going to college. It could be a lot worse.

I am including a really great website that has all sorts of scholarships and grants that you can apply for aside from the FAFSA. If you need any other help, please let me know.
