  1. errrrrrrrrrr Goofy .. that's not what is being asked ....

South Au HAS TWO TEAMS .. Crows and Port .. Yet Poor little Tassie who HAS given the game many great footballers IS denied their own team ... Totally Unfair ...

I reckon Tassie should be given a break .. especially since they have always been an AUSSIE RULES state... no need for bribery and free tickets and doctors in helicopters ..

  2. Because nobody goes to sports matches in Tasmania. You can't have a team without supporters.

  3. I see your point

    Adelaide have 2 teams

    and tazzie has none

    it comes down to money

if you could fill a ground 40000 each time a tazzie team played the Afl would put in a team

Get vocal write letters speak to your pollies

the squeeky wheel gets the oil

  4. not many people know Tasmania is part of Australia

  5. its all money and wanting to take down the rival code.....

Gold Coast has a now succsessful NRL team and possible Football/Soccer team...and even though the AFL has been looking at an Gold Coast team for a lot longer, its only now after the Rugby and Soccer team is there that they want to fast-track it.

And Sydney.......well........thats just sponsorship money. There would be support for a 2nd Sydney team but North Queensland (also NRL dominated) would pull better numbers!....Tasmainia could make a good club.....but money talks.

  6. Is Tasmania part of Australia?

Seriously, Canberra has 350,000 including Queanbeyan and a larger population within a one hour drive. We have stadiums and are close to Sydney. And we have no hope of getting a team.

The Raiders and Brumbies are in decline as a force in their competitions so there is a real opportunity for the AFL here rather than in western Sydney.

The AFL have a plan and are determined to see it through come what may.

  7. Quite simply put Tasmania cannot support the financial costs associated with having a team.  It is all about the scales of economy.

For example, the powerhouse clubs have memberships in excess of 40,000.  This equates to 8% of the population of Tasmania, an unachievable figure.

There is no venue that could hold the required amount of supporters that would make it a profitable gate.  Which at the Telstra Dome is about 30,000.  So the Governement would have to inject massive funds.

Finally there is no multi national company that would become the marque soponsor at a bout 2 to 3 million a year becasue it would not get value for its sponsorship dollar.

So it is purely about the dollars not the passion or sentiment.

  8. I'd love to see a team down that way instead of the gold coast or west Sydney, i have noticed people saying about the govt having to pay their way etc, that exactly Wat will happen if they put teams up qld and Sydney, as it has been for years, but its the AFL that helps them out.

tassy is at least a footy state, the crowd is there waiting, i think no one read your question properly either, you were saying tassy only has 500,000 less people the STH AUST right?, well the way i see it, they could surely support a team, they have to be Hobart or something, like the crows, the south Aussies took to them, so would the tasweigans, the market is already there.

  9. LOL @ ONLY 500,000 less people.  That's half a million less people!!  In membership terms that's a massive difference.

Ya don't have to be a mathematical genius or a rocket scientist to figure out why Tasmania is missing out

  10. This question can only be answer by the people in tas and the AFL staff.

I herd that Tas didnt agree to it

  11. too right there is the potential for the sponsorship nmoney to be there on their own right but instesd the thick afl would rather pour money into two teams that will not last  if a previous answerer staed that they would need 40000 to go to games in tas to make it viable does he realy think that the goldcoast will get that sort of crowd even sydney average around 20000 which can fit into york park

and since have nsw and qld dominated any underage championships

i can think of plenty of players from tassie who play in the afl anyway how many interstate players are running around with the afl subserdised swans and lions

with all the afl blustering about being a national league how can it be without the state that was second in the nation to take up th game

the acb had the same opinion of tasmanian cricket but they have won the pura cup one year and the ranger cup the nex that seems like a state that can produce tallent

all afl clubs seem happy to take membership money from tas but not give them a fair go

  12. Jeez mate I don't know where you are pulling these figures from.

Given below are the estimated figures (rounded) by state and territory at the end of March 2007.

South Australia increased its population by 16,100 (up 1 per cent) to reach 1,581,400.

Tasmania increased its population by 3,100 (up 0.6 per cent) to reach 492,700.

Also Hobart has a population of around 200,000 whilst Adelaide is 1.1million, big difference I would say.

  13. tasmania has nowhere near the 'growth' potential that Sydney or South-East Queensland does.

Also, Tasmania does not produce anywhere near the talent that South Australia does.

If Tasmania starts dominating the U-18 division 2 championships then maybe they can compete in division 1 with vic metro, vic country, SA and WA...then, if they can compete year in year out, maybe the AFL will decide that Tassie is producing enough talent & enough interest to justify a team.

    2 big problems basically,

    1. not enough scope for expansion in terms of 'supporter base'...(related to population growth)

    2. not enough local talent coming through to start a team from 'scratch'.

  14. im from Tassie, but i dont think they would have the money to support a AFL side, there NBL side dindt work due to money, thats why i think Tassie wont get a AFL side

  15. South australia isnt getting new teams, Queensland is.. i think.

Also the AFL board wants to "attack" the NRL states, which is Queensland and NSW. The AFL board wants more supporters and there for, more money.

  16. that's 500,000 for the whole state, 200 in Hobart, 80 or so in Launceston then spread out in the other cities and towns so . The state govt is determined to hold AFL matches in Launceston to give the nth some facilities but that would mean that an AFL team would not be based in the largest population centre. Also the economy may not support the fund raising to support a team.
