  1. why is it that there are 2 cell phone towers [ close to each other ] ???

    >>in some countries, the permission to build cell towers is only on certain small area, thus you will see several cell towers built by different mobile operators.

i have seen this several times - one tower is of smaller height than the other ! why is it so

    >>1) it could be that one is for satellite communication and the other is for mobile communication. 2)or one covers larger area and the other covers smaller area.

why do we need two antennas/BASE STATIONS ?

    >>for network planning done by operators to minimize interference. these antennas are called bi-directional antennas.

  2. I know the ones in my area are for different Applications. Some are cellphone towers, some are radio, etc.

Another possibility is that one tower is used in receiving while the other tower is used for sending, but I have no research to back this up.

Yet another possibility is that one is for direct communication with the cell phones (smaller one) and the larger one communicates with other cell towers (where wires could not be run), but yet again I have nothing to back up this idea.

  3. I am not sure where you are, but they may be competitors. Like in Canada, it could be Rogers and Bell.

Or, the taller one may be a call and the other may be to transfer signals between cells.

  4. i think the smaller one might a backup
