Why is it that we can freeze the picture on a HDTV?

What is the process by which we can do this amazing feat? It astounds me!

  1. Digital TV images are essentially like a series of digital pictures. The image is held in a buffer and normally each frame replaces the previous one as the program progresses. But if the TV is "told" to freeze it simply continues to display the same frame until told to play normally.

    With a Personal Video Recorder (Digital Video Recorder) the magic goes even one step further. The program is automatically stored on the the hard drive in the DVR, and that allows the program to be paused, backed up, replayed and fast-forwarded, all without actually recording the program (which it can also do .. like a VCR, except digital quality video and sound).
