Why is it that when I jog on the treadmill my stomach and sides get?

sharp pains and slight cramps? How can I stop this uncomfortable pain when I'm jogging? Thanks!

  1. i used to get that. Urm if you don't warm up and strength sufficiently before can lead to this and i heard that eating a banana 30 minutes before can help.


  2. Sounds to me like you have a side stitch.  A couple of ways to The best get rid of this is are:

    *Take a deep breath and then slowly exhale through pursed lips.

    * Contract the abdominals while flexing the body toward the area of pain.

    * Mix up your breathing pattern and stride pattern.


  3. this pain is a build up of acids in your stomach the more you run and the better shape your in you won't get this pain.

  4. This is normal and will eventually go away. However, if you have poor running form, this could be the cause.

    As a side note, get off the treadmill and run on the pavement. The treadmill does some of the work for you, so you won't maximize your output and results.  

  5. Your sides get these "stich" pains because you are not breathing properly. You need to slow down your jog and breath more regularly and deeply. When you get these side pains you should stop running and put your arms about your head and breathe deeply. This helps to open up your lungs and properly distribute oxygen.

    Your stomach pains could be associated with the lung pain (as noted above) or it could be due to something else. I don't recommend eating for up to an hour before working out. When you eat the food sits in your stomach for up to four hours, and for the first few hours specifically the stomach uses a lot of blood. If you exercise during this time your muscles will steal the blood and your stomach will get upset. You shouldn't drink too much water directly before or during exercise either. Small sips should be enough until you're done.

    So slow down and keep it up.  

  6. There is a muscle in your side that has to be trained in order not to get cramps.

    Cramps are caused by your internal organs like the liver and stomach pulling downwards on your diaphragm. If you haven't been jogging for at least a year, your diaphragm wouldn't be as strong as needed.

    Here are some tips on strengthening it; instead of faster jogs, try longer, slower jogs; it's the time that counts. Also, stretch out your sides before running by planting your feet on the ground and bending over sideways and sliding your palm down the side of your leg.

    I, being an athlete also experience cramps from time to time, but after training, my cramps have gotten a lot better.

    edit: Just thought of something important. It's also important to do a good thorough stretch before running as well as drinking lots of water. Try running before eating as a full stomach will result in more cramps.

  7. I've heard that side pain while jogging can have to do with dehydration.  Make sure you have water with you.  If the pain gets bad pause and take a few sips.  That's what works for me.
