Why is it that when it comes to the paranormal, we are amazed about it?

With anything, let it be ghosts, demons, murder movies, anything. It frightens us, yet we love watching the videos, shows, and movies about it. I know, I would be deadly afraid if something were to happen, yet I love watching horror shows. If I saw an alien in real life, I would be deathly afraid, but I love watching movies and looking it up online.

Anyone else feel this way? And why are humans amazed when it comes to the paranormal?

If we were taught from childhood that the spiritual world is real and that it's normal to see and hear these thing...we wouldn't be so in awe of them. I was taught about some of these things..but that they only happened to the ones they called "saints". So if something paranormal happened to you.. we'd think you might be a saint...even if you know you're not good enough to be a saint. I think we should have been taught that these things happen to ALL people. That way we wouldn't be scared and we wouldn't think that people who see/hear these things are definitely saintly people ..or witches..or mentally ill. If we all accepted these things...a lot of people could be let out of the asylums...or taken off medication..or stopped being "condemned". Remember when nobody EVER said the "F" word..at least not aloud. (no..you probably don't) Well, I do. If saying it can be considered "normal"...then maybe some day the paranormal will be considered part of the "normal" things of life.(although I think I'll ALWAYS cringe when I hear that word. (no..Not "normal" or" paranormal")

I'm amazed by real good magicians. I'm also amazed by the new, incredible things being discovered by scientists every day. If the paranormal actually existed, I'd be amazed at that too. But so far, I've not seen anything to be amazed about except the religious fervor of paranormal evangelists.

Your question requires two separate, but related answers.  First, about paranormal things.  Humans are curious beings.  No more so than any other animal with a brain, but curious enough and evolved enough to continue searching for explanations.  Along the path of humanity, many different types of people have been called upon to help explain things to curious types: shaman, wizard, witch doctor, priest, Ghostbuster, evangelists, etc.  When science became the predominant standard, many of the pseudosciences (astrology, parapsychology, witchcraft) were dismissed as schlock - and some for good reason.  Science is now the best thing we have going for explanations.  But as a science teacher, knowing how far we've come in science, I can only assume that we still know very little compared to 1000 or 100,000 years from now.  So because science can't yet explain it, does not mean that it does not exist.  Although much of the c**p is simply out there to make $$ from your fascination.

Murder movies are more about the human obsession with death and mortality.  Our own mortality is what frightens us.  Deep down, as we watch these films (most of which are absolute garbage, film-wise), we are titilated by the many faces of death because we know that for one moment we are better off than the guy onscreen.  If we are truly as moral as many self-righteous windbags claim to be, then we should be taught to be saddened by the glorification of murder.  Valuable artistic depiction of death ought to deal with it in a way that elicits empathy for the deceased, not apathy from its viewers because it's "better him than me."

The short answer to your question is:  cheese-ball movies are crafted to go for shock value and they found a successful formula to make lots of $$.

This known as normal human curiosity.

Unlike those that suffer from Debunker Disease where nothing outside of Newtonian physics (replaced by Relativity per Einstein which was itself replaced by Quantum Mechanics) can be allowed to exist because admitting any scientific knowledge or evidence since Newton will cause further brain damage and even poorer critical thinking skills, most of us wish to learn, expand our knowledge, advance science (and with it our understanding of the world) including how unusual (paranormal) experiences might occur because most our education is taught by those with Debunker Disease. Just trying asking a professor of psychology to let you do your Masters thesis on ESP if you doubt this. Carl Jung did his doctoral dissertation on the psychological study of a trance medium when this disease was not as yet widespread.

you know whats *real* paranormal is the "debunkers disease" the rest is all normal, its all part of this  universe far greater out than man will ever be able to reach while in their physical bodies....forget magicans magic, theres real magic just out of our reach for now....( maybe we will all get a million dollars when we die (joke) LOL...

well elizabet..., i am not an expert but i think it is because we don't know much about this. we may have never seen a real murderer, ghost, demon, alien, etc. but we might WANT to see one. i LOVE watching those kind of movies and shows too. i am always so interested in them. those kind of things are what i ALWAYS watch. we are amazed when it comes to the paranormal because we don't know what it is and as humans we are very curious so we want to find out. hope i helped u!!!!

We as humans are fascinated by anything we can't grasp or understand.  Because  the paranormal is by definition that which is beyond the way we understand the world to operate and because there is nothing beyond teasing anecdotal evidence, there is a perfect balance of the juicy "what if" and no real possibility of disproving any of it.

Because it shows us that there are things out there that are not normal unlike the everyday things we do such as sleep, eat, go to work *for the younger people  go to school *, i think are brains are just in aww when it comes to some of this stuff because you just would never expect it! It's not normal to see a ghost and read about people vanishing in the bermuda triangle and people claiming to see bigfoot a halfman/half ape running around in the forests ya know? :)

Is it not strange that the ones (scientists) that really want to experience the paranormal never do? Fiction scares us more than reality.
