  1. for the same reason people smoke, drink, self abuse or anything else, their nervous and need something to keep their hands busy.

  2. when i am nervous, i fiddle because it makes me think of different things. it gets my mind changing subjects.

  3. I've found, as an alum of veterinary school and a human PHD in Neuroscience, not only humans "fiddle" with familiar objects in these mental states; look at any mathematician at high levels, chewing on a toothpick all day, or pencil, a large parrot, male, scratches his beak (despite no feeling!) when he approaches a female; and bulls, if non-polled, "scrape" their horns, sans feeling, on a fence when approaching a cow! REason? Divert attention of "discomfort" from Reticular activating system (part of medulla, pons and midbrain) back to cortex to focus on "task at hand". In boredom, the "abstract craving " for interest is similar type drive.

  4. What the above poster referred to as "self-comforting behaviour" is better known as "animalistic behaviour".

As in, behaviour which you exhibit not because you want to, but because your body is making you.

Hench, all honesty is animalistic in nature.

  5. stressed - to releive it.

    Upset - to distract them

    Bored - to amuse them

  6. self comforting behaviour

  7. I don't know- but I always do it, irrelevant of what mood I'm in.
