  1. i think it's because we got used to the fact that there are kids and people immediately around us that need help.

we basically grew a little immunity to this fact.

as for people suffering in other parts of the world, they usually are hit with MAJOR catastrophic events like the recent floods, famines, hurricanes, etc.

unlike the people around us, they do not have anyone around them that they can beg money off of.

they either get food and resources from the UN and other charities, or they die.

another reason is that these people that we do send help to have casualty rates that regurarly reach numbers into the thousands, and sometimes into the millions.

    MILLIONS.

versus the handful of the local poor around us that already can go to local institutions for help.

  2. The United States is run by a complex govt.  We are pandering to many cultures and trying to kiss up to make ourselves look good.  If we REALLY trying to help kids we would look at our own school systems and the poverty in our slums and ghettos.  It must make our poor kids feel really good to see that the united states is helping a bunch of foreign kids but not helping anyone at home.  The hypocrisy is incredible.

It sounds like you have the same problems in Canada.  Maybe someone from Saudi Arabia will send us both a few billion so that we can improve our schools and help our handicapped kids and the poor.

I remember a time when the USA sent aid to a 3rd world country and they sent us back a bunch of sleeping bags and blankets and told us to take care of OUR homeless in New York.

Which just goes to show that it is better to look at OURSELVES before we go judging OTHERS and THEIR needs.  If we ALL take care of OURSELVES there will be NO NEED to take care of OTHERS!
