  1. when your eyes are fully open the light entering through the pupil comes from a variety of directions, the eye's lens focuses these light sources but as they are so varied they interfere with each other on the retina, picture it as many thousands of versions of the same image placed on top of each other but in slightly different possitions. when you squint you redice the number of angles light can enter the eye and so reduce the number of circles on the retina. this is also how depth of field can be altered on a camera with apature control.
