Why is it the symbol used in entropy(second law of themodynamics) is letter "s"?

  1. it seems Clausus did a lot of work on the subject surrounding heat and energy in a system.

    and it seems that the symbol "S" was used for several years before giving what "S" represents a name.  before "entropy" it was described as werk-inhalt and such....

    Clausus (who coined the phrase) was german, so his papers are in german, and my german is quite poor.  some say the S is from Sadi carnot (according to wikipedia), another physicist who did a great deal in the field...   I dont know!  my rather uneducated guess would be that he simply used S to represent something (and using Temp a lot, used something close to T), and named it later.  since one cant un-publish something, the work remains with S and so entropy is still always "S"!

    is interesting - maybe because it was defined as an integral inequality ? (only guessing here) .
