Why is it thundering outside?

I live in southern cali. Torrance, la district. Its summer and it should be hot. It seems to me as if this summer's weather is a bit odd. So why the h**l is it sprinkling, clouding, and thundering in the middle of the night in august? Does it have anything to do with global warming or future earthquakes?

yay! it is not just myself that is concerned then! because I live here in Redondo Beach, and I see lightning but no rain! why?! I'm sorry i cannot answer your question but I wanted you to know that you're not alone. I posted a similar question. I do believe that global warming does have something to do with it though. If you haven't seen Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth, then go watch it ASAP so you are more informed and can't be tricked by liars who say global warming is a hoax =] hopefully it has nothing to do with future earthquakes as we live near the san andreas fault line...  =/ it will be hard to go to the beach tomorrow if this kind of weather continues... I was very scared because the lightning has been going on for like two hours now nonstop and I thought maybe it has to do with the end of times?!! idk if you're religious but I am a Christian and have heard of the rapture. go watch Left Behind the movie and/or read the book series and you'll know what i'm talking about... email me your thoughts at [e-mail]. thanks and hopefully it's nothing serious u kno.

During the summer California gets occasional intrusions of moisture from the Gulf of California and tropical Eastern Pacific.  This moisture causes almost daily thunderstorms over Arizona during July and August.  Occasionally strong east winds push some of this moisture and thunderstorms toward the California coast.  It probably happens about once or twice a summer somewhere along the coast.  It is not unusual. It happens more often late at night or early in the morning because the thunderstorm complexes typically form in the heat of the day or early evening in Arizona and take a while to make it to the California coast.

It means nothing as far as earthquakes, and probably very little as far as global warming.  Enjoy the different weather. I was hoping it would happen down here in San Diego overnight, but the action is farther north instead.

this year has been one of the coldest summers on record in fairbanks alaska. it has also been one of the wettest. so your weather pattern is just like ours a little off. the planet is resetting itself. the weather on this planet has never been the same two years in a row. think of it this way. we know of several ice ages that have occurred over the life of the planet earth. we are not in one now so some where along the line the planet warms and cools itself. so to me global warming is a natural occurrence. i remember back in the 70's the scientists were worried about global cooling and we were headed for an ice age then. well now we are headed for a fiery death due to global warming. it is all a guess. the planet will be here long after we are gone. life will find a way...

global warming is part of a cycle the earth goes through every million years or so. in case you haven't noticed the earth has recently(within the last couple hundred thousand years) had an ice age. before that there was an era where there was not as much ice, before that there was another, you guessed it, ice age. 2 points for you. in between these eras the ice on earth was growing and building up to an ice age, then after it would slowly subside to the polar caps. this happens over and over again. the fact that human pollution is slightly speeding up the event dosen't mean that it is the cause of the event. thank you for reading lesson 1-1 in geeseflyfree2's center of knowledge. to hear more knowledge send me a message.  para conocer más conocimientos enviarme un mensaje.
