Why is it when Americans swear they say "excuse my french"?

I'm not French but in my opinion i think that is a bit rude

  2. It is simple irony. The French language is associated with culture and refinement, so the reference to speaking French when swearing is intentionally ironic.

  3. Because the 'other' word sounds as if french...Si vous parlai francais on peut dire pardon mon francais inlieu de dire ****.

  4. Well, we have another saying that refers to another culture: "It's Greek to me!" It means that something seems foreign and unfamiliar.

    I have no idea where the saying originates. I can't say it's the most flattering thing to use, but it's been long embedded into our history.

It is culturally biased.  I think it speaks to the difficulty native English speakers have learning to pronounce words in French, as opposed to learning other European languages.  It is so unlike English, so it's intended to be a way of a person saying, "I know I'm a dolt, so excuse my incoherent (inappropriate) babble."
