Why is it when I dig holes in the sand at the beach they always fill with water?

Is it possible to dig a hole and it doesn't flood?!

  1. Actually this is a very helpful survival tool.  If you are ever stranded or lost with no water, you can use this trick to help clean water if you happen to stumble across water that is stagnant.  Dig a hole lower then the level of the water about a foot and  half away from the edge of the stagnant water and wait.  After awhile the water will start to fill it up and because it has been filtered somewhat by the dirt, it will be much cleaner than drinking it directly from the stagnant pool of water.


  2. if you move to a high point on the beach you could dig a hole.  You are digging below the water table and at a beach the water table is really high.
