I was recently reading ClickonDetroit.com and there was a story on how so many people are applying for just 250 jobs at the Book Cadillac Hotel.

I also read on one of the Detroit newspapers (I belive the Detroit News), when MGM Casino was going to open its new location, they were going to hire around 1,000 employees and over 26,000 applicants applied

Finally, I read once on Yahoo! Answers that when a Wal-Mart was going to open in Metropolitan Detroit and hire 300 new employees, over 3,000 applicants applied.

My question is, why is it when there is a job opening in Detroit or the Metropolitian Detroit Area, there are so many applicants for just few jobs? For example, a new department store can open at Great Lakes Crossing and wants to hire 200 new employees and the department store can have over 2,000 people apply for positions at the department store.

  1. This is probably the easiest answer ... EVER!!! Michigan in general is in a recession... meaning there are more people than there are jobs... WAY MORE PEOPLE.... People can't make ends meet anymore and need at least one if not two jobs! I have a great job and I need to get another one just because gas is so high!

  2. Simple:

Detroit was once a booming vehicle manufacturing city. Now that that has dried up along with thousands of other manufacturing jobs, those that need jobs but don't have the skills or education for higher paying positions seek out minimum wage jobs. That's just how the economy has worked out these days.

  3. Michigan was a highly employed automotive industry.  With all of the plant closings and the state of the economy -- there are literally thousands of people out of work.  So when opportunity knocks -- everyone trys to get a piece of it in an attempt to rebuild their lives or to simply survive.  When the big automotive plants cut shifts or close - the ripple effect on smaller support type plants or factories -- causes more than just the automotive industry to be out of work.

  4. I guess the stores are just trying to give everyone interested a shot at the job....Plus, I'm sure that they don't want to cut the people.  If they were calling for only 250 apllicants to be hired then they are gonna want a variety of people filling out applications cause just the first 250 I'm sure there will be a problem with over half of them.  For ex. The first 100 people all have felonies and can't be hired, and the other half don't have a good background or something.  To work at the casino you have to be A-1.  You know how the jobs are here?  There isn't any jobs here! So when someone yells "Hay, we found a job opening",  Everyone goes running.  Half the population is either out of work or struggling with the work they have.  Hopefully I have been of help, but sorry if I haven't it's just the way I see things in Michigan

  5. there arnt any jobs in detroit, my boyfriends been looking for a job for a year, and hes worked in every working enviornment. it sucks.

  6. because people that are hiring people is not giving people jobs or they are not giving them chances to get a job. There need to be more people working legal jobs than not working at all or working illegal jobs.
