Question:

Why is it when statistics support a feminist argument?

detractors state that those statistics are skewed?

Yet statistics that support their particular argument are considered to be above reproach? Is this not a rather poor research stance considering they have no idea about how the opposing research was conducted yet they instantly deny the results?

  1. This works the other way too.  Pretty much every stat on here is skewed to somebody.

I've always wondered, for instance, why when there's a stat on here that makes women look bad, it's bad research, collection, etc., and it's "just a generalization," but when you have that same thing happen and men look bad, suddenly it's great research and true across the board.  For instance, the research that has shown that women aren't as good on average at math and science (something I question myself by the way, but that's another story) is just wrong and terrible to so many people.  But as soon as the stats that "show" that men do far less housework than women come out, suddenly all men are lazy good-for-nothing slobs who can't do anything right.  And when you point out exceptions you personally know of, you'll inevitably get several women shouting "Look at the stats!  Look at the stats!  Not true!" as if the stats are suddenly infallible.  I know, because I've done it and got that response before.

    It goes both ways.

Well, for all this talk about stats and whether they're dependable or not, I seem to be getting the most opposition of anyone based on the thumbs down here.  I guess I offended people on BOTH sides by calling basically everyone out.

  2. Yes it does seem rather amazing to think that anyone actually believes that all US government agencies have been overtaken by feminists (in spite of Bush Jr or Bush Sr or Reagan) and have been secretly promoting a feminist agenda. So none of the government data or statistics can be trusted, by anti-feminists. Well there's plenty of government officials I don't trust either-but I don't think every government agency is being run by patriarchal sexists bent on destroying American society. Sounds a bit too paranoid to me, but obviously we're not dealing with people grounded in statistical or research analysis (or advanced critical thinking skills), when we're dealing with anti-feminists in Yahoo.  .

  3. statistics are notoriously skewed in every direction for the purpose of supporting whomever is arguing their point....

that being said, that's why it's always wise to argue "principals and ideals" not stats and numbers.

    Added:

What really gets me, is the anti-feminists who want to whine and cry about skewed stats ALWAYS choose the same one or two studies/statistics... from about 12 years ago!

So the "1-in-4" statistic is wrong, big deal; old news from the '90s!

Is 1 rape in 10 or 20 or 50 any better??

Does that make rape any easier to digest for you guys?

Come on haters, get some current material!

  4. Most antifeminist are into cherry picking and if an argument support domestic violence legislature they blame it on bad stats and the government supporting feminism to try and be mean to men.

  5. Statistics have been historically skewed by all sides of every argument. People are much happier to read something that supports their point of view, and will always try to deny anything that questions their beliefs.

  6. They stole that idea from us - the feminists on this panel.  The anti-fems have yet to come up with a new idea.  They claim to hate feminists because they are told that feminists hate them.  Despite many denials from feminists (who should know if feminists hate men) the anti-fems keep up with their hate.  They deny good statistics because they know that they use fake statistics for their arguments - and they've been called on it by all the feminists that they then proceed to block from their highly repetitive and inane questions. But, I digress.  To answer your question - they have no other argument.

Edit:  I love this.  The anti-fems have claimed fake statistics for so long that they now claim feminism has a a history of false statistics without citing even one false statistic as evidence.  How warped can you get?

  7. Show me an argument, and in 10 minutes, I will have you skewed statistics to defend or attack said argument.

I love, yet hate statistics, because no matter how 'scientific' they are, they are always skewed around the point of view of the researcher.

2 of three people state they like soccer better than American football.

I asked myself, the guy I like to play soccer with, and our friend.

See?  So.  Statistics can be a good guide, or a signpost, but not unassailable argumentative fodder.

  8. You must realize that the feminist reputation in regards to the use of skewed, biased, intentionally misinterpreted and just plain false statistics is horrendous.

  9. Because they really are skewed?  And let not forget the fact that feminists have a history and a reputation of spewing out false, bias and sexist studies.

  10. Oh nice try but we do check to see how the research was done and who did it.

The one in four dv stat was proven wrong by the woman who did the study.

The one in four rape claim has been shown to be unsupportable.

The claim that only 3% of rapes are falsly reported has been proven false by many police agaencies.

The men are more violent than women research was dis proven by The CDC.

So again nice try but feminist studies are constantly disproven and will continue to be disproven so long as feminists continue to rely on lies to make their claims.
