Why is it you never see fruit flies around produce?

In all the grocery stores, I rarely see any flys that are surrounding the produce, someone told me that it was because of a genetic change to the fruit that they don't attract the bugs. Is this right?

You do see fruit flies around produce in the grocery stores.  Trust me on this one, I am a health inspector.  It is actually a very common and persistent problem. I see this problem several times a month and they are very difficult to eradicate. If your not seeing them that is a good thing....maybe your local health department is getting it corrected before you see them...   :-).

And if you go to bars they are very common in the alcohol bottles they pour your drinks from.  I have had many a bar discard alcohol bottles because the bottles have fruit flies in the bottom.

It is more likely that they spray the fruit with pesticides.
