Why is it you never see fruit flies around produce?

In all the grocery stores, I rarely see any flys that are surrounding the produce, someone told me that it was because of a genetic change to the fruit that they don't attract the bugs. Is this right?

  1. You do see fruit flies around produce in the grocery stores.  Trust me on this one, I am a health inspector.  It is actually a very common and persistent problem. I see this problem several times a month and they are very difficult to eradicate. If your not seeing them that is a good thing....maybe your local health department is getting it corrected before you see them...   :-).

And if you go to bars they are very common in the alcohol bottles they pour your drinks from.  I have had many a bar discard alcohol bottles because the bottles have fruit flies in the bottom.

  2. It is more likely that they spray the fruit with pesticides.
