Why is japan poor in natural resources?

  1. The Japanese country just doesn have has much to offer. There are naturally not many forrest and little mineral deposists in the earth. Also, the land has not very fertile earth and thus is not exactly ideal for agriculture.

    The main thing they have is the ocean and water. Thats why they eat so much rice and fish.

  2. It's a small island with very little land mass, and it's highly urbanized. There's very little land that could be devoted to agriculture, which is why beef is quite expensive in Japan, because they have to import it. There is a local beef industry in Japan, but farmers haven't enough room to raise large numbers of cattle.

    What it really comes down to is that limited land.

    But I will say this, it goes to show you that you don't need natural resources to become a wealthy nation. Something that other non-resource rich nations should look at.
