A new book about gross mistreatment of blacks between the civil war and world war II is entitled Slavery by Another Name.

People were not blind then; everyone with any influence looked the other way. Our local paper is revealing Texas attrocities in the early 20th century while ignoring what is being done here now and for 30+ years. Why do we pretend that this is not of crucial importance and that much can be made right. It is a question for journalism.

  1. journalism is for profit. Many times, truth doesn't sell. As the brazilian singer/composer Raul Seixas used to sing "I don't need to read the newspapers, i can lie by myself"

  2. As a History major it has only come to recent times that many documents are being revealed or discovered that documented these incidents.  While many can write a book or an article about things or incidents that happened, an author must have its sources.  Without actual documentation, it's one person's word against another.  By having first hand accounts you can verify the truth of said actions.  That is also being said that at the time, while many thought it was wrong, nobody was also willing to step in and change things, as you may or may not know through studying history-you can't change it overnight.  Many of today's norm's would of been considered atrocities of yester-years, just like many of yester-year's norm's are considered too barbaric or inhuman to do.  You just need to find perspective.
