  1. Kata is just a practical way of getting endurance conditioning in while at the same time practicing crucial techniques.  Over the years beneficial side effects such as better overall body coordination and control, plus both the brain's hemispheres firing at the sime time, thus stimulating their interaction, have also been found by scientists in Japan and Korea, where university studies on the effects of martial arts on the human body have been conducted more than in the west.  Regarding people who have done martial arts continuously since they were children, studies in Japan and Korea have demonstrated conclusively, they tend to be smarter than normal, with the top practitioners of a given form, having I.Q.'s as high as 150.  In fact, the smartest people in Japan, are its black belt Judoka.  Other studies have conclusively proven, that long term Judoka in Japan tend to have greater career success, they tend to hold leadership positions, and they also have prettier girlfriends.  Judo, like Karate and Tae Kwan Do, also has "Poomse" which they call Kata.  Kata in Judo are more difficult than in Karate because you must maintain control so as to not injure your partner.  Also, the two have to take turns; one is a thrower or submitter, the other the "victim," and then the thrower or submitter takes the role of the victim.  In Randori, the Judoka in question actively attempt to trip or throw a resisting opponent as Randori is "free sparring."  Because doing a Kata with another person requires more coordination and control, than doing it on your own, it stands to reason that there is more cerebral activity in the brains of Judoka than other martial artists.

Ultimately though it boils down to glorified shadow boxing.  In fact, Kata is basically Shadow Boxing, similar to western boxing which also does the same thing, albeit with greater deph, and more organized and refined.  Poomse is important because it helps get you in shape, again, it provides conditioning while you practice the moves.  They also teach timing, focus, and more importantly, precision.  Because the east asian martial arts developed in a time when high-tech foam focusing mits had not been invented yet, the best ways to train for precision in the absence of a training hall was making sure the Poomse, Kata, or as called in China "Tao Lu," were practiced exactly.  Your instructor says blade of the foot at knee height, its blade of the foot at knee height.  Learning how to be precise in mid air, relying on nothing but body control and mind visualization, is exceedingly difficult.  But that is also why it works.

    good luck.

  2. I've never heard of Poomse.... But kata helps your form, balance, breathing, ect.

  3. it teaches proper technique and style it also train discipline and balance

  4. You need to know it to get your next belt. lol. Seriously it helps you to perfect your techniques and helps your balance. Just remember if you can do your techniques correctly slow (in a poomse), then you can do them correctly fast (in a fight).

  5. If you want to know the importance of kata, search for this question, as it has been asked 1000 times, and look for answers from specific people, avoiding answers like all the above.

  6. poomse is like a predetermined fight. it also helps w/ balance, flexibility, technique, stamina, and power. there is a purpose and meaning to every stance, block and attack though they may not always be apparent. poosmse were not created for no reason.
