Rowdy is something he started to call himself.  It comes from the movie 'Days of Thunder' where Tom Cruses' rival driver had the name 'Rowdy Burnes.'  In one truck race he put Rowdy Busch on his truck, because he liked the "bad guy" character in Days of Thunder.  After that 'ol DW started to call him Rowdy when he was announcing the truck races.
