Why is leeds castle in maidstone?

this really confused me when i found out, because leeds is about 4 hours away from maidstone. so does anyone know why they called it leeds castle???

  1. Leeds Castle is so-called because it is adjacent to the village of Leeds near Maidstone. The village is first mentioned in the Domesday Survey of 1086 where it is called Esledes. Esledes is an old English word derived from “hlio” meaning slope or hillside. Leeds village stands on the slope above the valley of the river Len.
